However, there is also currently two different XSE lightweight commanders (O4860XSE and O4540XSE) so while all "Combat Commanders" are in fact steel framed, not all Commanders are "Combat Commanders". ;)
You probably knew that, but I would hate to see you order an XSE not realizing there is more than one...

Steve, Colt currently produces two XSE Series Light Weight Commanders •O4860XSE Lightweight Commander .45 Auto and •O4540XSE Lightweight Commander .38 Super. http://www.coltsmfg.com/products-c5-q7-COLT_PISTOLS.aspx

There is no "Combat Commander" in the XSE series lineup.
The original Commander was an alloy framed pistol, which was followed by the Combat Commander with a steel frame. That was then. Now, in the XSE line they have the Commander (steel frame) and the "Lightweight Commander" (alloy frame). In the 1991 series, they have the Combat Commander (steel frame) and no lightweight option.

Except those alloy framed Commanders with slides rollmarked "Colts Combat Commander" that apparently, in years past, escaped the factory!! :)

The O4540XSE Lightweight Commander is chambered for the 38 Super cartridge, but, I like where your head is at. A 40S&W would be nice.

OOPS! My error, I edited it! I was shooting my Sig 229 .40 that I have not fired in over 2 years, earlier today. So .40 cal was on my mind!
Thanks!

I have an XSE SS frame, its says "Combat Commander Model" on the right side of the Slide.

What counts is what the box says. If you look at Colt's catalog or web site, the steel XSE model is listed as "Commander," not "Combat Commander."

Doc, I have a Colt M1991A1 Compact, and I have a Colt SS Mark IV Combat Commander slide & barrel assembly that fits the Compact frame like it was made for it. If I put the Mark IV top end on the Compact receiver and list it on Gunbroker, am I selling a Mark IV Combat Commander?
The 1991 series steel Commanders are "Combat Commanders." It is not unknown for the workers at Colt's to put the wrong slide on a pistol and let it sneak out the door. What counts is what Colt's records call it, and that's what is on the box.

Hawk,
If I understand you the gun stamped "Combat Commander" is not if the box is not labeled as such?

Colt's catalog and web site do not list "Combat Commander" as part of the XSE lineup. Colt has been known to let guns out of the factory wearing incorrect slides (or perhaps I should say slides with incorrect rollmarks). My view is, if a model does not exist, and the box it came in, with matching serial number, says it is a "Commander," then the pistol is a "Commander" irrespective of what rollmark may be on the slide.
That's just my view of things. YMMV.

It's the same, only different!! That should clear it up. Does this mean I can't use my XSE in Combat?

Mine says Combat Commander on the box too. Guess I need to return it to Colt since it really isn't a Combat Commander............... :D I mean if the slide and the box say it is.....................
And the steel 1991 I had said nothing about Combat either on the gun or the box...................................

I guess we should start a new thread titled "When is a Combat Commander not a Combat Commander" That should open it up for some real intelligent conversation!

Do any of the newer Colt Commanders in .38 Super come with supported chambered barrels? Has Colt moderenized them yet?

They do not, and work perfectly fine without them.

And with Colt 1911s parts do interchange. Quite well in most cases. Only the frame is marked with a serial number. So if you find a Combat Commander slide on an alloy bottom, good luck proving it came from Colt that way, although I am sure that did happen from time to time.

So if you find a Combat Commander slide on an alloy bottom, good luck proving it came from Colt that way, although I am sure that did happen from time to time.I'm quite sure it does happen. I sent back a LT Commander about two years ago for a friend that had the magazine catch push it's way through the aluminum receiver, Colt could not repair it and offered to replace it. I wanted the blue/black anodized receiver like the pistol had originally, Colt was not doing that finish anymore and offered the Teflon coated receiver like the ones they are currently using or the blue steel Combat Commander receiver. If I would have chosen the blue steel receiver, it would have been a factory LT with a steel receiver.
Knowing Colt's policy for not discarding perfectly good components, I'm sure they use up any parts they have. ;)

How do they get a light weight with steel receivers?
Steve

The slide says Lightweight Commander, the Colt factory would have replaced the defective aluminum receiver with a steel receiver bearing the original serial number, that serial number would have shown as a Lightweight Commander, which it would not be with a steel receiver.

Who said any such thing, where do you get off thinking I was trying to fool someone? It wasn't even my pistol. You asked a question because you didn't understand my first post and I answered it, it was Colt's idea, but I'm trying to trick someone? Just to be clear, my friend chose to go with the current LT receiver, even though it did not match his pistol.

I have what i used to think was a Combat Commander. Because it was stamped as such on the slide. I don't have a box though and I didn't buy it new so it could be...what?
Also, it bears an 80B etc serial no and does not have a series 80 trigger mechanism nor does it bear evidence of ever having had same, at least to my untrained eyes.

RonThe 80 serial number prefix is just that, a numerical prefix, it doesn't mean for certain the pistol is/was a Series 80. IIRC, the 80 prefix began circa 1980, the Series 80 firing pin block saw introduction in 1983. ;)
