What would be the advantage of having a 1911 colt in 9mm? Seems to me you are sacrificing the advantage of having the same gun in 45 ACP. I may be missing something though.

To me, the primary advantage is that you can practice with the "same" gun you carry for half as much. That's if you buy ammo -- if you reload, the difference goes down (as does the cost). Around here, a 100-round value pack of Winchester white box in .45 ACP costs $19.99 at Wal-Mart. A 100-round value pack in 9mm costs $9.99.
The 9mm is also advantageous for people who are recoil sensitive, and perhaps for introducing new shooters to the 1911 so they can become accustomed to the gun and to shooting before moving up to the .45

Agreed with the post above. Good practce, defense and cheap ammo. Plus, it is great for those who are recoil sensitive.
