This Colt, along with 99 others were shipped to the Norfolk Navy Yard on Aug.17, 1913 for the USS TEXAS, then under construction.
I also own #43909, the only 2 known survivors from the original 100.
Also, look at the company roll mark in the last photo. It was double struck.. In fact it appears that the slide was ground down and the name re-struck. I have seen several early 1911's that this has been done to, interesting!
I have a theory about this. I suspect that the original roll die broke during the first stamping which left the mark incomplete or damaged.. So the slide was re-milled and a new die was used to complete the mark. Note that the re-strike is deeper than the other marks.

Thank you John! As a native Texan, I'm always proud to see anything associated with the U.S.S. TEXAS.

Very Nice John,
Often when I see old guns, I wonder what kind of story they would tell if they could talk. It must be nice to own older guns when you know something about their history.

Thanks, I am always looking for firearms that are historically important and/or can be identified to a person, place or event.... I own many 1911/M1911A1s that fall into that category...

Look at the photo of the "closeup of the closeup" I added to the photos above.
That is a good example of the type of imprint a roll stamp die makes. Also note the square "dots"....

I know one thing, you have more drool-causing material, than anyone else in this site.
And I need to thank you for sharing those lovely pictures with us.

and to add to it, I think that Mr. Holbrook needs a picture of all of them together to fully appreciate his wonderful collection which seems to number in the twenties if I count correctly from what I have seen on here so far...
He seems to favor Navy Colts
Of course El Commandante when he does that he needs to warn you so that you may cover your entire computer desk with a drool shield

I do not think I'll ever need to warn John, he is a gentleman all right, but I think what you are asking might be a little difficult. The reason being that he needs a VEEEERYYYY wide-angle lens to include his whole collection! And you will need a very high resolution monitor to see it!!! LoL
