Thank you, Hunter.
These were from our "staycation" in New Orleans a few years ago. I know a couple are a bit touristy, but the two boys were part of the entourage....the blond kid is my son, Kyle.
I will post some more over the next few days...I just got a new computer and I don't have a good photo editing program for it right now, so it's a task to get them rotated and resized on Photobucket.

Thank you very much.
Carl Zeiss 28-200mm f2
I consciously wanted to "close" that shot by squaring off the roof instead of framing the building corner into the shot with sky above. I think it makes the shot all about the building.

NO...NO, I like it much better with the building composed just like it is. Squaring off the roof would be boring.
Zeiss glass?? Man I hear you. What sort of a camera are you using with Zeiss glass?

It's a Sony DSC-f828. I love this camera.......... I had Nikons (F1 and two different F2's) back in the day and shot nothing but Ilford black and white because I couldn't get colors to pop like I wanted them to....wound up trading them all for motorcycles and guitar amps and when the bug bit again later I picked up the Sony. The only thing I can't get my arms around with digital is low light...........

Digital in low light can be tricky.
I like a fast lens (f/1.4) and a high ISO (3200) and I can get some pretty good low light shots with fast shutter speed.

Nice pics.

I grew up about 45 min from Louisiana (lived there until age 23). Been to the FRench Quarter countless times. Last time I saw itw as the Christmas before Katrina, on a vacation. I haven't been back since, unfortunately.

I think he sounds better than ever; I saw him a few times when he was with Felix in the 70s...

Check out the videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/depper This fella really knows his West. There are two from the WTC in August, 2001, and one of Leslie as a teenager with the Vagrants, at a pool party (part of a "beach" film, I think).

Dare I mention Django Reinhardt?????

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_Reinhardt

"Many musicians have expressed admiration for Reinhardt (whose main influence was Eddie Lang[citation needed]), including guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, classical guitarist Julian Bream; country artist Chet Atkins, who placed Reinhardt #1 on a list of the ten most influential guitarists of the 20th century (he placed himself fifth); Latin rocker Carlos Santana; blues legend B.B. King; Australian guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel; Pierre Bensusan; the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia; Phish's Trey Anastasio; Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi; Jimi Hendrix; The Libertines' Carl Barat, Synyster Gates; Shawn Lane; Stevie Ray Vaughan; Derek Trucks; Mark Knopfler; Les Paul; Joe Pass; Peter Frampton; Denny Laine; Jeff Beck; Jon Larsen; Steve Howe; Charlie Christian; Frank Vignola; Barney Kessel; George Benson; Wes Montgomery; Martin Taylor; Tchavolo Schmitt; Stochelo Rosenberg; Biréli Lagrène; John Jorgenson; Michael Angelo Batio; Richard Thompson; Robert Fripp; and Jeff Martin. Willie Nelson wore a Django Reinhardt T-shirt on tour in Europe in 2002, stating in an interview that he admired Django's music and ability. The British guitarist Diz Disley plays in a style based on Reinhardt's technique and he collaborated on numerous projects with Stéphane Grappelli. Jose Feliciano attributes his unique style, in part, to that of the master, Django Reinhardt. In 2009 he composed an album inspired by those musical influences and entitled it, "Djangoisms."

Everybody pays homage to Django, but few play like he did...most of the reason is that he had two of the fingers on his left hand fused together when he got caught in a bad fire affecting many of the wagons in the gypsy camp where he was living. I think the respect is more of a "triumph of the human spirit" kind of respect than his being a particularly esteemed pioneer in jazz guitar.....I'm not taking anything away from him but he had to work with what he had and his lines and abbreviated arpeggios don't make a lot of sense to modern players with five fingers, brilliant though they are. He's sort of like a guy with a prosthetic arm that won the PGA Championship.
If I had to bow down to only one icon in modern jazz guitar, it would be Joe Pass....during the heroin days, particularly....or any time he hooked up with Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald.

Oh, that is nice. And Ella and Oscar Peterson are always nice together. Especially with Ray Brown along.

Excellent points, too. I think the Hot Club is more valued for what they did with rhythm, than for either his or Stephane's virtuosity. Django's lines really make little sense, as you point out. And the violin, well, I don't even know how to judge that for jazz. Kind of like a talking dog, as there is no decay to the notes.

Wes Montgomery was always my favorite, but now I suspect that is rather like preferring Jimmy Clark to Juan Fangio. It is hard to tell how much of the assessment is from sympathy to a tragic (short) career. You know, poets should die young, and all that. I notice as I've gotten older, I've gone more to Fangio, Botvinnik and Pass, instead of Clark, Fisher and Montgomery.

Older. Trying to avoid grumpiness, though. Sometimes with success.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t316/gordonsorensen/PortisheadThird.jpgIn defense of the Hot Club (and rhythm), virtuosity isn't everything. Third has neither virtuosity nor melody going for it, but I think it's the best thing I've heard in a long time. Or, at least, I've trained myself to like it. Gotta stay up-to-date.

Here's one I actually took myself, but has nothing much to do with the French Quarter.
