Here are some pics of the RR that I am trying to trade for my M1. He says it does have the original HS barrel. I have no idea how to value these things, but I want a USGI pretty bad.

I would say a RR in that condition is worth about $900 to $1000. So if you're willing to trade your M1 for that, it's your choice. It does look like it has Colt grip panels on it but original Keyes are not hard to get.

After acquiring such a gun, is it wise to make it a safe queen, will the value signicantly increase as it gets older and the condition remains the same, or could it be an occasional shooter without ill effect?

Chances are good that nothing would ever happen to hurt the Rem Rand except for general wear but why take the chances. You can buy a much better shooter such as a Springfield for $500 and blaze away. I think that the old RR should become part of a collection to look at, talk about and share with your collector friends. IMO
