I have come into this piece recently and would like to find out more about it.
It has the M1911A1 U.S.Army stamped on the slide, on the right side; below that, on the frame, there is NATL 'C'or'G' RO CAL .45; and then below that, near the trigger but still on the frame, is the stamp 1576. and lastly, on the right side a number '2' stamp into the front part of the trigger guard. (I know this is wordy, but I want to give an accurate description)
On the left side is 'PATENTED APR. 20, 1897. SEPT. 9, 1902, DEC. 19, 1905, FEB. 13. 1911, AUG. 19, 1913. Then the Colt emblem, then COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG. CO. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A.
It came with the leather hip holster, an ammo box, and 3 clips. It has no rust, looks to be in good shape. very little overall wear.
What I would like to know is, well, all anyone would care to tell me about this particular handgun...history, value, etc.
I thank you in advance for your help and I appreciate your time. Thank you.

Sounds like an aftermarket frame with a USGI upper.

Is 1576 the serial number?

Any other markings at all on the frame?

A good site for markings is http://www.coolgunsite.com/ . Just click on the "1911 ID Pages".

The slide is a Colt replacement slide, circa 8/1938 to 10/1943. The frame is aftermarket.

Thanks for the info...So as I understand it, this is a good functional weapon, but not worth much? Good shooter, I believe is the way it's put?

If it's an aftermarket frame, it's value is only as a shooter.

Since the origins of the frame are unknown, you might want to have a qualified gunsmith give it an inspection. Most aftermarket frames are fine, but some are absolute junk. Collectible? No. Shooter? Yes, as long as it is safe to shoot.

Shooter's grade weapon, perform your safety function checks or have a qualified gunsmith give it an inspection. There were/are numerous 1911 aftermarket frame manufacturer's that very in quality from good to junk. Any markings on your holster or magazines?
