Ambi Safety

I just ordered a Baer Custom Carry, and ordered it without the ambi safety. I think they look great, but I have never found a need for one as I am a confirmed "righty", and I have heard both pro and con on them. Some worry about snagging in trying to quickly deploy from concealment, and some worry about the safety being accidentally moved into the "fire" position. Comments?

I haven't had the need for one yet. Its a personal decision I guess to have or not to have one.

I only have 1 1911 that has an ambi, its on there only becasue it came that way from the factory............a Springfield Loaded.

My take is that an ambi safety is more used in competition shooting when the drill requires you to shoot weak hand only. My experience with ambi safety is like you said it snags clothing. Your call if you want one.

Doesn't the right side of the ambi-safety pose a potential to knocking off the safety if it is bumped while in the holster?

Well the lumbar support bolsters are there, in that area (if you have those) and the seat belt is in that general area...

I've wondered why the ambi-safety on my Kimbers is a little smaller than the left side safety... I wonder if this is the reason...

Good reason to have a thumb break holster in my opinion... at least while in the vehicle.

I have a Colt Gold Cup National Match with and a Colt Combat Elite without (and a couple other 1911s without) and it would seem to serve better on a comp gun but I haven't had any problems with my Gold Cup disengaging the safety while being carried. I don't think they could hurt especially for whatever reason if you did need to disengage the safety with your left hand. You can "what if" yourself forever so if later on down the road it would seem better you can have one installed or better yet buy another 1911 that has one. You can never have too many 1911s :D

I've been thinking of adding an ambi to my guns for a long time but never actually got to do it. Recently, I've been playing with an Airsoft pistol, which has such a safety and I can't say it was very useful for me, nor was it a problem either. I would say, if you are not a leftie, you have no use for it.
