If you were buying a matching parts gun and looking for one that would serve as a shooter too, which one? How much would you pay?

With as many good commercial 1911 style pistols as there are on the market I wouldn't pay any more than $5/600 for a shooter. If I could buy all matching pistols they would probably be blued Colt 1911A1's.

Colt. I would keep it around a grand.

If you wanted a war time vintage gun you could pic up a slightly modded 1911a1 usually with more modern sights in the $500-$600 range. If you wanted it 100% original your probably going to have to spend like $1000 for something with a little wear on it. I would stay away from the 98% and up finish guns, cost will be alot more and you would have to be very careful when handling, that is unless your really into it looking almost new and you can afford the higher asking prices. For holding its value and papularity I agree with one of the posts above, probably stick with Colt.Just my .02.

Find any WWII refurb. The all-USGI guns are holding their value and going up.
Just so you know, though. Even the rebuilds are getting too expensive to shoot.

I wouldn't consider any all-matching U.S. military 1911 or 1911-A1 as a shooter, their values are high and climb higher every year. Even the arsenal rebuilds are becoming collectors items. If you want a shooter, go get a new Springfield GI, replace the stocks and the ILS mainspring and it's parts and you will have a nice shooter that looks, for all intents and purposes, just like a real WW II era 1911-A1.

Here is a Springfield Armory, Inc. WW II Mil-Spec. I paid $400.00 for it in the box. It has been modified with a GI stamped trigger, main spring housing and Keyes plastic stocks. For the bucks, the best buy on the market!

For a shooter I would take Mr. Holbrook's advice, and pick yourself up a Springfield, an excellent choice for the money.
