How many rounds do you guys shoot through yours before you declare it "dependable"? Coming up on the 800 round mark on my Springfield GI Mil-Spec model with no malfunctions of any kind. Just curious. Thanks

A possible rule of thumb is "if you feel that you can rely on the firearm to save your life when needed" could be considered dependable.
How do you feel about the dependability of it?

Stumbler, I feel that I could depend on it in a tight situation right now ,but the gun itself is still smoothing out.Extraction and ejection are great and my getting comfortable with it is also increasing. Accuracy has come a long way.

The stage where you are at with your gun comes at different times with others (each firearm is different). I've got a couple I feel are dependable with less that 50 rounds. The thing is "dependable" is a personal choice.
Good Shooting!

I don't know if it is so much when is the gun ready as when the shooter is ready. Really guys I don't have a whole lot of experience with gunfighting, but the main thing is that the gun will shoot at least once, if the hit is accurate its either over cuz the BG went down or he is so surprised that you have time to put some distance between you and him. Most decent 1911's will go bang once, I sincerely believe that one shot just about takes care of it, lots of shots just help keep everybodies head down. If you've got a few mags through a 1911 and it acts normal I think the rest is on the shooter,

There's alot of factors in deciding this one..............for me.
But one can shoot alot of ammo thru a gun and it doesn't jam. Then all it takes is one out of spec round, and that all goes to pot.
Before I clear a gun for L.E. use..........it must run thru at least 4-500 rounds with out cleaning. Then run thru several boxes of different types of HP ammo. After that.............no one can predict the gun. But if it can do that.........that's about as confident as one can expect.

I thank you all for your response. I feel right now that I have more confidence in the pistol, than in my ability to use it. Practice, practice, practice!!!!! don't you just hate it

guys that have a touch of doubt about themselves are usually the one's that can "roll" you'll do just fine, stay low, don't go looking for trouble, it'll come and find you. be safe.

I would only trust 100% the wheel guns I own using quality self defense factory ammo, no reloads. Sorry to all the fans of the self-shuckers, but that's the way I feel. If it takes more than 6 rounds to get out of trouble - well - I'm in deep doo doo... My .02 YMMV

The truth of the matter is what you just said, I feel pretty good with my 1911 but I think that its an inside job, I'd have no problem having a wheel gun guy by my side to give me a hand when the heat is on. And I'd prefer not to go up against a wheel gun. You are not wrong you are not right, you are just trying to take care of your package, just like the rest of the good guys.

Since you didn't specify 1911's only, it depends on the maker of the weapon to me.
I have enough faith in all the Sigs that I've owned to now call them ready for carry after a flawless box which has been the case for every Sig I've ever owned and that's about 7 of them. I've had probably 20,000 rounds though all of them combined and not one malfunction yet, so I don't really even test them any more.
I run 500 flawless rounds through any 1911 before she's "street ready".

Close. But the other way around.
People don't smoke Sigs. Sigs smoke people. http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/fighting/1/fighting28.gif
