It appears to be an early Colt contract piece but it will require better photographs to actually comment further.

That's a nice example of an early Argentine Colt contract pistol. Back when I had an FFL, I sold a fair number of 1927's. The lowest serial number I sold was 24263 and it was in pristine condition. As I recall - but won't swear to - it had a Colt slide and marked like the example you have above. Many of the 1927's I sold were in excellent condition.

The one I kept for personal use has a sewer pipe bore that is amazingly accurate with cast bullets. I initially thought about replacing the barrel but after seeing how it shot, I changed my mind. It's all matching, including the magazine, but I've had it modified so it has no collector value. It was issued to the Argentine equivalent of our Coast Guard and is marked P.N.M. for "Prefectura Nacional Maritima". It also has an additional serial number on the frame only that is likely a "rack number" or PNM inventory number.

Other than it, the only other one I've kept is a .22 conversion for the police.

Only 10,000 Hartford produced Colt 1927A1's were made and they were numbered from 1 to 10000. Everything after serial number 10,001 was made in Argentina under license from Colt...Robert

Robert, that is pretty much what Alex Gherovici says in his book "Military Pistols of Argentina" and is likely accurate. That's also why I said I wouldn't swear to the slide being marked the same. I sold the pistol over 15 years ago and was going by memory.

In private correspondence with Alex, he clearly stated that there is a great deal of information about the 1927 pistols that is unknown. This was at least 10 years ago and much new information may have been found. I don't know if he's updated his book or not. He was living in Philadelphia at the time.

On page 70 of his book is a line drawing of a 1927 marked "P.N.M." and is nearly 3,000 higher in serial number. The only difference between my example and his drawing is the location of the slide serial number and the addition of an issue or inventory number to my frame. Mine has also been proofed by the West German proof house in Munich, indicating that it came to the States by way of then West Germany and was imported by Interarms of Alexandria, VA..

Very interesting indeed. I own two 1927 Hartford Produced Colts, both are less than 300 units before the last run of 10,000 pistols...Robert
