i was wondering if it was possible to update the barrel in a WWII era 1911 so that it got along better with modern ammo. any input?

What type of problems are you having with ammo? What condition is your current barrel in? There are several factors that can influence accuracy other than a barrel if that is the issue.

to be honest, i haven't tried anything else other than FMJ. i was under the impression that a WWII-era barrel mixed with modern ammo (ie-hollow points, etc) would cause FTF and FTE problems. is this all in my head? thanks.

oh, and even with range spec FMJ ammo, accuracy is good. anything i miss certainly isn't the gun, ammo, or barrel's fault! :)

While it used to be true that GI barrels and commercial barrels before Colt's Series 80 would not feed hollowpoint ammo, I don't think it always the case these days. Older hollowpoint designs were usually truncated cone style bullets with a large hollow cavity. These were notorious for snagging the edges of the barrel feed ramp. Modern hollowpoint ammo usually features a bullet with a rounded ogive, very much like FMJ, and a small opening to the hollow cavity. Before condemning the barrel, I suggest you buy a box of hollowpoint ammo and try it.

Yes it is possible to update the existing barrel of a WWII 1911A1. When you said update are you referring to replacing or having it throated? I replaced mine with a Wilson Combat.

ric and stan-

thanks for the answer(s)! they were exactly what i wanted to hear. i will 1. try modern ammo and see for myself and 2. ric, you answered my main question by confirming a wilson combat replacement will fit. i did not want to have it throated.

did the wilson combat drop right in? thanks again.
