 I am trying to replace the stock magazine release (Colt) with one that is 1/16-inch longer. The screw that apparently locks the release in place does not seem to want to unthread. Is there some trick here? I applied quite a bit of force, but stopped before I cammed out the screw head slot. Is there some other way to remove/replace the magazine release?

it doesn't have threads, it has a lever, you have to push the mag release button while you turn it, The lever has to travel through a little slot in the frame, The mag button has to be pushed almost all the way in before you can turn the screw. it only turns about a quarter turn or so before you can drop the mag release out.

As slabsides pointed out, push the mag release almost all the way. And while doing that, put just a little (and I mean LITTLE) pressure on the screw (counter-clockwise) until it unlocks. You will probably have to adjust the amount of engagement on the mag release while you do it. But it will come out............take your time.
