Grips are normally very easy to change!! You just remove the grip screws with the correct size blade that fits the notch in the screw head and remove the screw. Sometimes the grip screw bushing will also try to come out and if that does happen try to tighten the screw back a little tighter to try and seat the bushing again. Normally the bushings do not loosen up but sometimes they do. I tighten mine until I feel a little resistance on the screwdriver and then stop, in most cases the head of the grip screw will most likely be flush with the grip panel. To tight and you will crack the grips and also the screws may make contact with the magazine in which case magazine removal will be difficult. I always check magazine removal whenever I change out a set of grips.

There are a couple of old threads dealing with changing the grips on the PT1911, including posts regarding the above-mentioned bushings. I didn't have any problems when I changed my grips, outside of having to do some filing and sanding on the grips because I didn't realize that they were cut for single-sided safeties until I got them home. FYI, the screws on my gun were a 3/32" hex head.

As you've already discovered, the Taurus PT 1911 doesn't accept standard GI model grips. In searching around for custom PT 1911 grips I came across RAASCO Grips (raascogrips.com). They offer PT 1911 grips on all their models--wood, Dymondwood and micarta. Ordered a set of Dymondwood grips for $34 plus shipping. They arrived in less than a week, look great, fit perfectly, and appear to be of excellent quality. If you're thinking of replacing those gawdawful black plastic grips on your PT 1911, they're well worth considering, IMHO.

Hello,

You should check to see if your old grip screws extend into the mag-well. Remove the magazine from an unloaded pistol. Look up the mag-well to see if the screws extend beyond the frame into the mag-well.
