Hello, I seem to have a problem with my Springfield milspec 1911. It seems that either the second to last or last round of the magazine seems to jam up the gun. The round gets ahead of the extractor, so instead of the extractor engaging correctly, the front of the extractor slams into the back of the case resulting in a jam since the slide can't return to battery. I read the thread in the gunsmith sticky articles stating that this could result from the lack of a dimple on the magazine follower, but the metalform magazines I'm using do have a dimple. I've tried 3 of the same metalform magazines, and it still happens with each one. Could it be improper extractor tension? I am totally stumped. Any ideas?

Try a different magazine,or could be magazine spring.

I'm working through the same problem buddy, only with an RIA 1911. The most consistent answer I hear is weak magazine springs, but I'm always wondering why other pistols will do just fine with regular springs while some pistols may choke on them. Mine will probably take a trip back to CS, its had a few other hiccups, too.

It could be the geometry of your extractor's nose. Compare yours to area G in this: http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p232/niemi24s/P078290001e.jpgThe radius in this area helps "gather in" the case rim if it gets a little ahead of the breechface.

However, even if the rim's ahead of the extractor, the extractor claw/hook should snap over the case rim after the round gets chamberered - unless the extractor tension is too high.

So, you should also check your extractor's tension.

Metalform magazines are pretty reliable IMO, my Super mags are Metalform as are 2 of my .45 mags and they been working fine for years.
