View Full Version : Colt Lightweight Officer's Magazine Question

Yesterday I put a deposit on a Mark IV Lightweight Officer's model. The only problem is the last owner misplaced the original magazines. According to the box, the gun has the matte finish. The slide is a very dark blue/black and the frame is a medium shade of gray. I assume the frame has the original finish. That being said, what would be the color of the original mags? I only see factory Colt mags available for an officer's model in bright blue, stainless, or nickle. If the mags do match the frame, if anyone has a source for the proper mags, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

blushirt23,
I will defer to the experts as to the proper finish of the magazines you seek. However, aesthetics aside, I am one of those persons who desire functional reliability over appearance, so I am known to carry Tripp Research CobraMags in my Officer-sized New Agent. Totally reliable!
That point out of the way, the Colt Checkmate magazines will more than likely match your pistol's finish.

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I would probably use one of the aftermarket brand magazines when carrying also. I am just hoping to get 2 correct OEM mags to keep with the box.
Thanks,
Chris

You can get Colt (OEM Colt) magazines from Brownells. The blue magazine would be proper for your blue-ish :) pistol.

Had a heck of a time accumulating a half dozen reliable magazines for my Officers Model. Bought Colt branded mags from Brownells, but half of them would not hold the slide open on the last round.Brownells was good about exchanging the bad ones, but the acceptable rate stayed at 50%. Finally got them all to work, sort-of, by adjusting the follower tab that engages the slide stop with a pair of pliers, but reliability was not 100%.
I finally ordered rebuild kits from Tripp which included a spring and hybrid follower. Installed those in the Colt shells and not a problem since. Tripp had to make up the kits "special" as eithe they were out of stock or didn't normally stock kits for the 6 rd mags. I thought that was a nice thing to do for a $50 order, and will remembe that when new mags are necessary.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the information. I guess my course of action will be to order 2 OEM mags and see how they work out. If there is a problem with them, I will try the rebuild kits from Tripp's.
Thanks.
