View Full Version : Well, that was less than helpful... (Colt Gunsite Pistol)

I called Colt today to find out the height of the front sight on my Gunsite pistol so I could order a night sight to replace it. Their response? "We don't give out measurements." Does anyone know the height of the front sight on the Government and CCO Gunsite models? I don't have calipers and I would rather not alter my sight alignment until it's time to replace the sights.

The front sight height (maximum--it tapers slightly from back to front) is 0.194". The rear Novak sight is 0.350" high--attempting to measure the true verticle height, not the slant height as the back face of the sight slants forward. This measurement is from the base of the sight to the top. Digital caliper used. The pistol is the Gunsite CCO.

Hmmm, I wonder where they do the measuring from. Brownells lists that model front sight as having available heights of .175", .185", .190", and .200". Oh well, I'll just get the .200 since it is close enough (and a lot closer than .175!). Thanks for the help!

It's really dissapointing when employees or companies take such a rotten attitude to their loyal customers in need of a little assistance. I guess this is why I just do all my own gunsmithing and avoid the snotty attitudes you get from "customer service". Of course it helps that I'm a tool & die machinist,...LOL
I could understand their stance if you called and asked for something odd, like, "What is the exact angle of the cut of the feed ramp?" Then they might fear it was someone setting up a competitive shop, or about to do some dangerous gunsmithing of their own...
But asking what the height of the front sight is so you can replace it with a similar height one? Geez...that shouldn't be too secret to reveal!

Call Gunsite. They still sell the pistol.

Ask their Gunsmithy himself.

OK, if lksstbls measured his at .194" and Brownell's lists it as .190" wouldn't 4 thousandths be closer than .200 which is 1 hundredth?

It's a moot point, I e-mailed Richard Heinie and Gunsite today. The Gunsmithy said that the full-size was .190 and the CCO as .175, but measuring the original would be best, which I lack the calipers to do. Richard Heinie said that he supplied .190 sights to Colt, but they also bought .250 sights and cut to POI. Mr. Heinie also said the proper place to measure sight height was at the dovetail, not at the highest point, for those of you who want to measure yours someday.

Well it's nice that Gunsite & Mr. Heinie would talk to you about it and try to help figure things out, unlike the people at Colt,....I've been dissapointed with them for a long time now hoping things will change for the better someday.

Since all the measurements of the 1911 are so secret anyway, it's understandable that they would be reluctant to release any information. I have a set of blueprints on my computer.

LOL,....yes the specs on Colt 1911s are a closely guarded secret!
I too have multiple blueprints on my 'puter,......(don't tell anyone),.....LOL!

Nice one!
Of all the handgun designs in existence today, whose blueprints are the easiest to find on the Internet? :D
Come to think of it, the exact height of a front sight of a Colt CCO is one of a handful measurements that can qualify as candidates for a company-secret, since it isn't GI spec..? :D

My Gunsite pistol features a .190 high Heinie post, but the .185 post work fine also.

Funny, because the front sight isn't even a Colt product on the Gunsite CCO,.....LOL

I have never thought to call Colt. I usually call the sight sellers, like Brownells and they seem to always know.

Good point, they are usually more than eager to help.

How may Colt Gunsite models are there? Are they all 70 series?

There's three, full-size matte blue, full-size stainless, and the matte blue CCO. I have all three. :D And yes, they are all Series 70 pistols.

The person who answered the phone was probably too lazy to call the custom shop and ask. So they gave you a nonsense reason instead.

Actually, the person who answered transferred me to the Custom Shop, where they refused to answer.
