So I picked this up after a long sabbatical of shooting Glocks.
Nice to have a 1911 again.
Anyone know what year this was made?
All original except the grips, shows some bluing wear and minimal scratches, insides show minimal rounds fired.
Will test it this weekend.
What would have been a fair price?
Thanks for your help.

That is a nice one. "51" I believe, or 50-51.

Very nice. My 1952 LW has serial #26xxx. I suspect Kenhwind may even be bit low on the estimated value. You sure couldn't buy mine for $1,000

My outdated Blue Book (by a couple of years) 100% - 1,095. I jsut looked in it and, so I will leave that door open.
I sispect that maybe the original grips shrunk, because the ones on it are Colt 1991A1 grips.

demodave,First,1951 as stated[according to Colts Dates of Manufacture by R.L.Wilson,]second,also as stated by kenhwind the original grips shrunk.[I've never seen early ones that haven't]I don't know about the 1991A1 grips, but Brownells sells "original replica"grips that are close but not so great quality and they are BLACK[originals were brown] lastly, a year or so ago I bought an unfired 1968 model that had the mag loaded and put in the ol'sock drawer. The only wear mark on the piece was[and still is]a slight scuff on the mag follower where it was loaded and unloaded. Sadly, no box or papers.Daughter was selling after Dad passed away. She asked $1000 and I thought that was a fair price w/o the box or papers and,of course, shrunken grips.I am lucky to have that and a Series 80 Commander that I got from a friend who has since passed on.It was [and is]NIB.When I decided to go to Commanders for CCW nationally,I'm a retired LEO, I bought new XSE Commanders so I wouldn't endanger the old beauts! You have a VERY nice piece.I would have given a $1000. in lower Alabama,w/o original grips, papers and box it may be a little high but you won't find a nicer one around here for that price. Good Luck with it and, best regards, Nick

Beautiful vintage Commander, and then some. Congratulations! That is gorgeous.
I'm sure that you will take great care of it until John comes calling to use or take possesion of the Commander you have most graciously voluteered to store and maintain for him (as all Commanders ever made and yet to be made are, indeed, his; no matter where they may be "stored" for him. :D

This one is going to be a keeper. Still haven't decided if I'm going to CCW it, or keep it as a safe queen.
Got it from a good friend for $800.
Insides are very clean, it is now lubed properly, and sitting in the safe.
Problem is, now I have the 1911 itch again......

Nice, and for sure a $1K+ gun. I think the secret is a lot of folk that bought them are getting quite old or dying off, so guns of this time period are available. I bought my 2007 all steel Commander that I currently carry at the end of 2007 for $750, if that gives a perspective to the issue.
