I just purchased a Stainless Government Model XSE and want to make the following changes to it.

1) Remove the ambidextrous safety and replace it with the single side tactical safety from the Combat Elite.

2) Remove the XSE Beavertail GS and replace it with the Smith / Alexander Upswept Beavertail GS fron the Combat Elite as well.

Is this just a parts swap out or is it more involved?

Both of the parts you mention will have to have gunsmith fitting done.

I should have been a little more clear, I can take care of any minor fitting issues with these two parts, I am just trying to figure out it the frame will need further machining to accept the SA GS

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, the S&A will require tang modifications.

Wilson makes a "drop in" that will fit without machining, your XSE will take the "Commander" version.

Thanks, I sure don't want any finish issues, I was just hoping the XSE was already radiused in the tang area as the Combat Elite.........

Does Wilson make a drop in GS without the memory bump? Does anybody?????

Not that I am aware of.

I too prefer the S&A without the palmswell, but don't find the Wilson too obtrusive.

Ohhh.............. The S&A is clean.................

I'm thinking about getting the fitting jig and a brand new file and go for it.

Here's mine with the SA grip safety without the palmswell. It was the best upgrade ever.

I called S&A and they were very helpful. The Combat Elite's factory grip safety is an S&A so I ordered one with a bump and drops right in with no frame alteration. I did have to sand blast it to match the dull frame on the CE. As for the XSE if you will order a Wilson Drop in for a Colt Commander it will fit your XSE Govt model without frame alteration. The Wilson number is #429 and Wilson says "NOTE: BC/SC Version also fits Colt* Enhanced Govt. Model". BTW I didn't hear all of this from "some guy" or read it somewhere, I actually own both of them! LOL

Another S&A on an XSE Combat Commander.

I am thinking about the same on my Commander, if it were steel I would probably already have done it.

I have compared them with the safetys off and I think that there would not be much metal removal. Most of it will be off the bottom of the tang from my observation.

I just received the fitting jig and GS form SA. I'm not real sure that I want to try fitting this safety on my own as I am scared of ruining the Colt's finish. I don't think I could take it if I slipped with my file.

For now the Colt GS will remain on the pistol (at least until I work up some courage).
