Serial number indicates that it was made in 1970, but it is nickel, Were these made in Nickel or is it a refinish ?

Colt made them in nickel finish back in the 70s. Or it could be a refinished pistol. But wait a minute, you mentioned LW. Hmmmm!!! Experts out there, help!! I didn't see a nickel LW in the 70s. Combat Commander, yes. Not a LW commander.

This is one of the times when a picture (a good one) is worth a thousand words. Plus always call Colt with the sn and ask them when it was produced. Made in 70, but what month? Be nice and fluffy and they may tell you what month.

I just don't recall ever seeing a LW in anything but anodize and blue.
What's the serial number? This might be a interesting, learned something new thread!

I'm back because I'm intrigued by this LW Commander in nickel finish. An aluminum alloy frame cannot be finished in nickel. Colt's competitors subcompact frame (3" bbl) in SS has the frame finished in some sort of perma coat. Are you sure your frame is aluminum and it's nickel?

I have seen a few with nickel slides and controls, but with anodized aluminum frames.

Oops, I missed the date - my experience is with 15 to 20 year older guns. 1950's. Age and inattention are terrible partners. :-)

Serial number is CLW008895 , The frame is the same color as the LW frame in the newer enhanced 45s that are out today. SO it may be anodized. I'll try to get a pix, but tough when it is still at the store. The only issue I have is that the engravings ( lettering and colt) look a little light.

That work of art is a million times better than the one I am looking at. The one I can get, at this point in time is a shooter only. It's in OK shape probably 75-80% TOPS. What is your's or anyone's opinion of sending it to Ford's refinishing and getting it refinsihed back to it's original condition, whether it be blue or nickel ?
I can pick this one up for $500 out the door. I know it's taking a chance but what do you think

Have to ask, IF the gun is in good shape operationally, and is "only" a shooter due to cosmetics, what would it cost to send it back to Colt's for refinishing and a good tune-up? After all, if it's only in "that" bad of shape cosmetically, does it really matter for a shooter?
(Besides, I'd love to know what Colt's charges to refinish a gun.)

I would send it to Ford's to have it refinished, Blue: $285, Nickel $340. At that point I would have a VERY nice carry pistol. the tune up, I can do.

Texagun,
That is a beautiful pistol. I was unaware Colt ever made a lightweight pistol in a finish like that. I wish I could find one of those.
