View Full Version : Formula for determining front sight height?

I have a RIA tactical which is shooting low. I plan to switch the novak sights out for some tritium ones and I want to make sure I choose the correct height front sight and rear. I figure I'll just use the original height of the rear sight but I'm not sure what to get for the front. Is there a formula that tells you how much to take down the sight if your shooting a certain amount low at a certain distance?

I know that I can bring a file to the range and gradually take off stock until it aims true, then measure the resulting sight height with a digital caliper but I'd rather not to go to that much trouble if there's an easier way.

Any help appreciated

Here's one I've used:

SC = sight change
SR = sight radius
CT = impact change on target
DT = distance to target

The formula is SC/SR = CT/DT

or SC = SR x CT/DT

Make all dimensions in inches (or feet, or furlongs, whatever you want just all the same).

Example: With a 30 inch sight radius, to change 1 inch at 100 yards, SC = 30 x 1/(100x3x12) = .008 inches
