View Full Version : My first Colt!

Went to a local dealer and they had a couple of Colts. I started to get a used Series 80 all stainless that was labeled as a .45 cal for $750. However, I looked closer and it was a .40 cal. I wanted a .45 so I ended up buying the new Series 70 all blue for $950. I am thinking about buying a Colt Gold Cup Commander. What does everyone think is a good price for one?

Depends on what you are looking for in the Gold Cup Commander World. We would love range reports and picts on your new find.

Very nice Colt congratulations.
The Gold Cup Commandes are nice, I was luck enough to find one a few years back.

I am still looking at the Commanders. It looks like the Gold Cups are going for around $900-1300.
Kimbernoob, I wish I could have gotten both, but I really want to save my money for a commander. If anyone is interested I would be glad to tell you where it was.
As for everyone else, thanks for the comments and I will post soon how the range went when I get out there.
Thanks,
EA

The blue .40 is a good price at 750, only made for a short while and seem to run around a grand.

GC Commander.....scarce, sought after. You should get it as they are few and far between.

I noticed a two tone Colt Commander Gold Cup for over 1000. The dealer is saying that the two tone were even more rare. Is that true and does anybody know the exact production numbers of these guns? I tried looking up the production number for these guns, but don't know exactly where to look.
Thanks,
EA

What else would the dealer say? !! My personal problem with the 2-tone GCs are that, for me, they really are not GCs. They are a normal fixed sight enhanced Commanders gussied up to LOOK like a GC Commander. They have GC looking triggers with no overtravel and GC rollmarks. I admit to being opinionated and this is my opinion only. :nono:

I, for me only, would pass on that "poser" and concentrate on one like mine or the very nice one Hunter has.

Paul45, your Gold Cup Commander looks gorgeous! :appld:I agree, very nice pics of a wonderful series 70!

Javi, thanks, forum member Larry found 2 of them in his area a number of years ago. He took the NIB and I got the LNIB one.

If my memory serves, the Colt Gold Cup Commander was made in two series, and each series had 500 blued guns and 500 SS guns. paul45 has a Custom Edition in SS; I hate him.

I sort of know this as I have been looking for one for years, and evertime I find one fate jumps in with something. My addiction to Ruger No1 Rifles is greater than my addiction to 1911s, and my addiction to double rifles exceeds that.

Anyway, to get back on thread, I think there is a pool of 2000 guns and none, to my knowledge were two tone. The prices I have seen in the last four years are from $1200 to $2000 for one, and they are almost always pristine if not NIB.

Thanks Dakota. It is a shame no one is shotting these guns. Are they worth to much to shot?
This is what the dealer is saying, "This is a Colt Commander Gold Cup in the least seen two-tone configuration. The caliber is .45 ACP. The pistol is all original and is as new in box. It has only been test fired from the factory. From what I’ve researched these are pretty hard to come by. Colt first produced a run of 1000 Gold Cup Commanders with 500 being blued and 500 being stainless. Then they ran a second batch of another 1000, again with 500 blued and 500 stainless. Compare this to the bi-tone version which was only produced once and was limited to 300 pistols total."

I think the dealer is basically right, but I have not seen the 2-tones take off in price like the original ones. Anyway, I still feel as I did in my post #11. I will try to find a pic of a two-tone. As long as I am running my mouth, what is the 2-tones price? That would be the deciding factor. It's nice and all Colt, but the price is ......?

It's a good looking piece and he wants around $1300. I am partial to the Stainless, though.

I can't help but think that 1300 isn't out of line, a bit high maybe but.....
Sure looks like 002 to me.

John,

I believe this was the night janitor who got somewhat bored pushing his broom... and decided to help out a tad... certainly inexcusable behavior... and no doubt punished severely... but alas, these illegitimate Commanders got loose... the shipping department was errant and let 'em slip out the door before they were caught...

They should know ALL Commanders belong to YOU!!! :D

Yeah, all Commanders belong to John... except MINE!

That 2 tone #2 on GunBroker is intriguing though...

Well, I finally splurged and bought a used Colt Gold Cup Commander off Gunbroker. Hopefully, everything will turn out alright and I should have the gun in hand by Friday. Can't wait! Here's alittle tease of my new gun.

Thanks ajax! That gun has been on my long list forever. These 1911s are like an addiction. You can't just have one(like Pringles)! I will give you a shooting update when I get the gun and hit the range this weekend.

Nice find, Ericutk1 !

I might be out of line, but $1600 for a Colt is mighty high. I know many of the new offerings are close to $1000. I just can't justify spending that much on a handgun. Don't get me wrong, I have several pistols that cost more than $1200, I just start to resist buying at the $1000 price point.

Dave, Your not out of line. I didn't actually pay $1600. I thought I could get one for around $1200 and I was pretty close to that figure. You are right that it is alot for that gun, but it is a limited gun and it seems to be harder to find than a newer, more expensive custom made gun. Don't get me wrong I love my other custom made guns, too. I just hope it lives up to my expectations.
