Anyone have any idea who makes the extractors that Colt uses? How has everyone's extractor held up and do you notice they hold their tension or do they need tuning very often?

Colt makes then, by hand, in their own factory. (By "by hand," I don't mean using only hand tools. What I mean is that there is a craftsman standing at the machine, producing each extractor. They are not castings or MIM, and at least for now they are also noy CNC machined.)

Thanks for the info. I would assume then that they are considered good parts? Have you had good luck with them compared to aftermarket?

Colt extractors are quality parts.

I have read that some gunsmiths say that Colt small parts are among the best made.

Never heard of any problems except adjusting. They seem to do a fine job.

Hawkmoon, didn't you knew they were built by the elves when cookie sells were down? Why we do not mess with elves.

On a more serious note Colt has made a many great parts. I have a few. (None are for sale by the way).

On an even more serious note, I have not seen an internal (or external) extractor fail on a 1911. They may start to throw brass in different areas than you expect when old.

My Series 70 extractor is original and I have fired many tens-of-thousands rounds in my gun in 37 years.
But I did have to adjust it.

the factory extractor on my repro series '70. the gun would function 100% but it it was not beveled at all at the bottom edge of the hook and would leave burrs on the rims of the cases. I reload, so I pulled it out and fixed it myself.

I wonder what steel Colt is using to make their extractors out of. I don't think that even Colt uses original spec steel. Does anyone know what they are using to make their extractor out of?

I have not had any trouble with Colt extractors, but it seems like the old Colt extractors are better than the new ones IMHO.

Do you know the date of manufacture? Colt experimented with MIM extractors briefly, then came to their senses.

They're machined from bar stock.

I know, but what is the bar stock? Is it 1070, 1090 like original spec called for, or is it 4140, 4340 like Wilson and EB use?

OD, the pistol is a a recent manufacture repo series '70. I'm pretty shure it's not MIM. I have a stainless government model made in about '98 that has a MIM extractor. it works but I still need to replace it someday. it's a great 1911 its like the old defenders but in a full size government configuration. factory beavertail, extended safety, novak/heine configured rear sight and a dovetailed front sight.

Probably isn't MIM then. If on the off chance, it would look like the one on the left.
