View Full Version : New Colt GC Back To Factory

I received a call tag from Colt customer service today and returned my new Gold Cup Trophy. Initially I noticed the scuff where the slide and frame came together and decided not to make an issue of it as it was going to be a carry gun and would pick up lots more scuffs. This is what it looked like after about 100 rounds.

Last week while cleaning it I noticed a significant amount of side to side "play" at the rear of the slide. I didn't measure the amount of movement but it was a lot "looser" than my S&W 1911. In fact the fit and finish of my Taurus PT1911 was a lot better.

In any event, I got the call tag and sent it off to the factory. Now to wait. :(

Ouch! Hope all works out to your satisfaction.

Hopefully they will treat me as well as some of the other folks who reported issues. In addition to the scuffing and slide fit, I also mentioned erratic ejection as well as brass scuffing the top of the slide just aft of the ejection port. I am confident that Colt customer service is top shelf and expect to be satisfied in the end.

My pistol is on its second trip back - hoping it does not come back with any other issues.

The woman at customer service is very nice, however should you get one of the guys on the phone they are rude & nasty, my wife was not pleased with talking to them at all.

Good luck

I think overall the Colt Customer service is good.

Since I buy most of mine "off the rack", I get to examine before I buy, and have never had to send a gun back to Colt. When I have had little issues over the years Colt has been great about asking me if I want to send the gun back and when I say no, sending me the part (often two) for free.

I received a copy of the Colt Product Service Repair Order acknowledging that they received my pistol. According to the work order they are going to repair the slide rub, tighten the loose slide, check ejection, break the edges at mag well and slide bottom, test for function and return. The repair order includes a "Need By" date which I believe is the estimated completion date, July 9, 2009. Seems like a long time but I guess I can live with it.

They may be backlogged with a lot of slide-rub pistols coming back. Seems like that was a big problem this past year. Good luck.

That sounds like some communications I've had with them in the past.

When I sent a gun back Colt's written communications were terse at best, but they did fix it.

That is a pain. I have a series 70 repo that has all the things you mentioned. Scuff marks, slide rattle. I bought it to shoot and it does that good. I'd sure hate to be without it for 2 months for that though. Actually, my scuff is worse than that. Last night I was shooting behind some barricades and when I fired, the gun knocked into the barricade and put a nice little scarf on the bottom of the slide. Just means I've been shooting it. Good luck on sending it back. Did Colt CS say anything about this issue when you had them on the phone other than send it back? Are they saying it is a problem on their part?

My Colt GC came home today! I month earlier than I expected. According to the work order it appears as though they refaced the slide, tightened the slide fit to the receiver, adjusted extraction, and broke the edges of the slide and the mag well. The great news is that they returned it a month sooner than expected. The good news is that the slide to receiver fit is much better. Also, they covered up the scuff on the dust cover and softened up the edges of the slide. The bad news is that the scuffing issue still exists. The contact point has moved closer to the bottom but the scuff is back after just racking the slide a couple of times. According to the work order three people added their initials so I assume there were three sets of eyes on this. That said, I am not very happy with Colt service. I will function test at the range tomorrow and if it functions properly I will keep it. It will be a shooter so I am really not too concerned with the scuffing unless it leads to functional problems. I really hate to say this but, based on my experiences S&W service has it all over Colt.

Frank,

My series 70 went back to Colt for the same reason a full month before yours, and still is not back, though I did have them do extra stuff to it. Consider yourself lucky (I guess?) that you got it back quickly, but not to your satisfaction. I will be really interested to see if mine comes back "fixed" or fixed.

Are you going to call and tell them the rub is still there?

I bought a Gold Cup at the end of march, it had the exact same problem, the scuffing on mine was much worse than yours though. Sent it in April 20th after trying nearly a week to get ahold of someone at customer service, the repair order says i'll get it back June 18th, so hopefully it's right and won't have to make anymore trips back to Colt.

How did any of these launch lead? Range results? Ejection and extraction? I mention this because a friend had issues on a Kimber and he got a new gun under the old frame because I think he gave them a lot of info on the pistol. Another friend had issues with a GCT, and also sent them a list of issues with lots of data (including shot targets) and told them while it was there to groove the front strap and a bunch of other stuff. He got it back fixed with the extras done for no charge. I think if you send any pistol in for a "scuff" they will probably fix it, and then are you going to shoot it?

My Series 70 reproduction had the dust cover scuff issue (among others) and took two trips to Colt for repair.

The first trip they "repaired" the slide. I had the same results you did - the problem remained.

On the second trip back they replaced the slide. It is beautifully fitted, silky smooth, and the rub is gone.

Send it back. Colt can do good work; they just need polite encouragement.

Good luck to you.

There is some good news here,.....your Colt will still be running with it's lil' scuff long after your Taurus has gone belly up..............

Well I got my Gold Cup back yesterday, the slide fits ok now. They reblued the receiver because the slide wore the blueing off, but it has to make another trip back to Colt. When they reassembled the gun they managed to put a 3" scratch on the right side of the frame. I called Colt and spoke with Travis, he acted like there was no way they did it and tried blaming it on me. I had the gun for a total of 30 min at this point, I only opened up the case and pulled it out. He said they have a Quality Control person that looks the guns over, at this point I don't think Colt has any quality control. I argued with him for 5 min because he said I would have to pay the shipping fees to ship it back to them, when I demanded to talk to Joyce Robino because of my dissatisfaction he immediately said he would mail me a shipping tag. I am 100% disgusted with Colt, this may be the last firearm I ever buy off of them.

Sorry to hear that but unless you expect to have to send every Colt you might buy back to be fixed what will you accomplish by never buying another ? Just because one "bad apple" tried to give you the run-around doesn't mean the whole basket is spoiled. From what I have read, Colt service overall is very good and is comparable or better than others. CS nightmares are not exclusive to Colt. Sleep on it; it may well look better in the morning. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v114/wetidlerjr/Smilies/grinning-smiley-003-1.gif

I agree with wetidlerjr. You should have been lucky enough to get Carol (I think) is CS. The guy they have answering the phones now needs a new position. The sooner Colt figures that out the better. Every time I've called them and get him, I get the impression I am bothering him. That's not what you want in a CS rep.

I've calmed down a bit, I bought the gun March 21st on my 21st birthday, because that is the age in PA when you can legally purchase a handgun and only got to put 50 rounds through it. It spent about two weeks here and the rest of the time back at the factory, and it's going back again, and Travis at customer service isn't the best rep to deal with, and thats why I am upset.
