Hi Im new to this forum and my question is what is the difference between 01918 vs gold cup. I have an opportunity to buy one but I don't want to stray to far from the original 1911 colt. thanks

The O1918 is about as original as it gets, while the Gold Cup is an entirely different animal. The GCT is a 1911 pattern pistol, but is marketed as a target/competition gun. It has adjustable sights, rubber wraparound grips, extra wide three-hole trigger, duckbill grip safety, angled cocking serrations, and other "modern improvements". It's not what I would buy if I was looking to stay with something closer to "original". The O1918 is! Also, you can call Colt at 1-800-962-COLT and they will mail you a printed catalog for free.

Good luck! (and welcome to the forum!)

If you're interested in a true 1911 type Colt the O1918 is nice. The first one I saw looked just like an original. The second one was also very nice. I don't have one, but would like one.

Ditto what Jim and Ken have said... you won't be disappointed with the "1918" based upon what you've stated...

...I don't want to stray to far from the original 1911 colt.

In fact, you'll likely be overjoyed with a "1918" WWI 1911 reproduction.

The reason any manufacturer has different models is that each model is optimized for different applications. The Gold Cup (and National Match before it) came about due to the fact folks wanted an accurrate 1911 with adjustable sights. The Commander is a little smaller and easier to carry, and the Defender is smaller and more easy yet, with the problems small and easy bring to the equation.

How much do you think you are going to shoot? What are you going to shoot at? I have Gold Cups, carry a Colt Commander, and have a couple WWI repros. I would not want a WWI repro as my only 1911 or "main gun".

If you get a WWI repro you may have issues with "hammer bite". I don't. You may have issue with the tiny little sights, esp. at indoor ranges. I do. If you want the closest, cheapest thing to the first 1911, then the repro is it, unless you have some relative that has an original and is going to give or will it to you.

I like the WW1 repros and if I didn't have Guniste Pistols, the WW1 just might be one of my range pistols, I like it that much.
