Just found this one last week!

Number 356370, so it's 1918 production and appears to be almost correct.
(Anyone know where I could find the proper MSH?)

Is it blue or phosphate? Can't tell from the picture, but it looks phosphate.

Beautiful pistol! I have one very similar serial # 276XXX. I would classify that pistol as much as art as weapon.Beautiful pistol!

I don't know where you all find pistols like this, but it sure isn't in Montana. Great find!

If you live in Montana, I envy you. I bought it from a trader I've dealt with before. He usually finds his stuff in Baltimore, carts it home and charges me a criminal markup. There's a big antique gun show in Baltimore every year, and there's always a lot of primo stuff there.
Johnny, I'm not an expert, buy comparing this piece to the descriptions in Clawson, I think it's got what he calls the "black finish." That is, it's blued, but by a process that created a darker color. It's actually a dark grey. Definitely not phosphate, despite my lousy photographic skills.
Exit, thanks, I've been watching eBay! But the seller is reddogalaskan, whose magazine auctions have been complained about many times in these fora. I won't bid on his stuff.

Thanks for pointing that out to me, I read some of the threads on that guy, and went back to Ebay and viewed his feedback. Looks like a scammer to me. I reckon I should have looked at his track record a little better. Sorry.
Have you checked with GPC, they used to carry them at onetime.

What is the correct flat MSH for this pistol? Sarco (www.sarcoinc.com) has flat MSHs for the 1911, metal and not expensive. They are checkered, in a recatabgular pattern (i.e. the grooves run up and down, back and forth, not diagonal like on the grips).
Go to their home page. There's a search window at upper right. Just enter 1911 and hit SEARCH. Pick the first hit in the search results and you'll be at a listing of 1911 replacement parts.

The correct MSH would be smooth. WWI vintage housings are not too hard to find but finding one that matches the finish of the pistol may be difficult.
