Is anyone using, or has anyone used, the Aftec spring-operated extractor? If so, how well does it work, and is it a drop-in or does it require fitting/adjusting?
Thanks

I've installed a few on customer's pistols but I personally haven't put a lot of rounds through a pistol with one. It used to be very popular with IPSC race gun shooters but I don't know if it still is.
It is designed to pivot at the firing pin stop and it has two small coil springs on the side of the extractor for tension. Springs are available in different tensions to adjust it. It's not a drop-in part but installation is fairly simple. The right edges of the firing pin stop need to be rounded since this is where the extractor pivots. If you try to fit the firing pin stop too tightly (like you would normally do for a conventional extractor) the extractor won't be able to pivot outward and you'll get failure-to-feed issues.

OK, I'm a traditionalist, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. But it sounds like you have to mess up a good part to make this new "gadget" part work right. Is that about it?

Yes you do need to modify the firing pin stop, which is a pretty inexpensive part.
I "mess up" a firing pin stop every time I install one in a pistol by taking a file and removing the extra steel from it until it fits the slide ;)

Is there any advantage over the standard extractor?
Thanks for any input.
