I was unsure if the frames were the same I have a Colt series 80 and I carry it every day. I have been thinking of getting a new slide and like the idea of a 4" barrel on the commander sized guns for carry.
I guess what I am asking is if I get a Essex arms commander slide will it work on my GI frame with out cutting it?

No. The GI frame is longer in the dustcover area, and the recess for the recoil spring and plug is not cut as far back in the frame. You would have to have both of those cut in order to fit a Commander length slide on there. And once done, you're committed. You can't switch back to a Government length.
Also, just to pick a nit. True Colt Commander's are 4.25 inches. The pseudo Commander sized guns from Springfield, Kimber, etal are 4" (usually bull barreled).
