View Full Version : Crimson trace grip failure

I'm on set #2 in under 90 days on my Kimber CDPII compact 1911. I used the laser very sparingly as I wanted to be a good shot without it first. Both sets have just stopped working for no reason. Batteries are ok, etc. The grips still look ok, just no little red dot anymore. Anyone else have CT grip failures? I have an email into CT support, but to be honest, I just don't trust them anymore after 2 failures and I'd rather get my money back and chock it up to a bad experience. These stuipd things have cost me more than they're worth as I paid to have the saftey bobbed (for laser pod clearance) and it also appears that I've stripped one of the grip screw bushings since I've swapped out the grips 3 times. What an awesome weekend I've had so far.

My son sent a set of CT Grips back after about 6 yrs of use, they were replaced without question. I have a set on my Sig 229 that I carried for 13 yrs, that are about 16 yrs old now, and still in working order!

I have two sets and they have worked perfectly for about 8 months. Not long for bragging rights. Yours apparently were flawed from the factory. I would call Kimber and Crimson Trace and get them replaced.
Both are very good about responding to problems.

I'm not worried about the customer service. That part of the whole experience has been the only bright light. Perhaps I've gotten into bum sets from the same store, so that's why I've decided to give the factory set a chance.

Update.
As expected, CT came through with service. Turns out the production run that I'd gotten both grips from had a manufacturing problem and it was causing the failures. They were good enough to send me another pair or grips('Kimber' branded) plus they paid for my frame repairs (stripped threads in the frame) and they also sent me a set of CT grips for my wife's XD9. The grips are still working after around 300 rounds so I've no reason to belive they'll fail again.
Too bad all manufactures aren't this service oriented.

Just a quick follow-up and closure.
It appears that everything is back to normal. The hits shown below are while firing one-handed and as fast as I could pull the trigger using regular 230 gr FMJ. It's a total of 2 clips at about 7 yards (~20 ft) just by putting the little red dot in the general region I wanted to hit.

I appear to have one 'zinger' down to the right... the three over to the left are probably the last three rounds. Your hand/wrist gets kinda sloppy after popping off that many big rounds that fast with a compact alloy-framed 1911. This shows the basic advantage of the laser grip in that I can just pick up the gun, not really "aim", and still manage to hit pretty well. This is exactly why I got the CT hardware.
