Today my Colt Combat Commander (S70 or Pre-80) did not lock back and I switched out the CMC mag for Colt mag and it would only insert half way and then a little piece of metal fell out of the magwell. (can not believe I saw it) Here are the pics. The gun is what 25 yrold, but has VERY FEW rounds thru it because it is safe queen saved for a full custom build. It has NEVER had (+P) ammo thru it and only had under 1000 rounds of WWB or Fed American Eagle thru it. I guess I'm trying to figure out if this is just a rare bad Colt part or if there is some other possible cause for this?

I've heard of several Colt slide stops breaking just like yours. Must have had a q.c. lapse. There are several quality replacment parts on the market as of now...just find one that pleases you and replace it. EGW,Wilson,E.Brown,STI, Brownells is your friend here. ;)

Just a bad part, but easily replaceable from a variety of sources; and many times they are "drop in."
Take care,

Is the gun chambered in 9mm, or was that just a handy cartridge?

No its a 45. I had a P-35 on my hip when taking the photos so pulled a Black Talon out to get the SS at an angle you could see the break.
I guess I'll start looking at new SS replacements now. Thanks All!

It looks like there's a number 2 or 3 on the back of the slide stop? That would indicate it's not for a .45, but a .22 or 9/Super. Could the slide stop have endured some extra stress or ? as a result? I have a number 3 in one of my .45s, but I filed it down to .45 dimensions.

This has to be one of the most impressive catches I've seen here in a while...
