View Full Version : New 108282...new to 1911's - some questions

This is my first handgun. I had fired 1911's previously which is how I knew I wanted one. I find myself to be much more accurate and comfortable with the 1911 than with the Beretta M9 I have spent time shooting.

Just got a new 1911. I would like to swap to wood grips (they didn't have 108284 on hand). Where is a good source for grips? I don't want anything engraved, just nice wood grips with good fit and finish.

Also, any mods you reccomend? Should I consider a trigger job? The sample I fired at the S&W range today felt pretty good. So, I'm thinking probably not.

Finally what do you prefer for magazines? I'll probably purchase 2 more so I thought I would ask what folks like around here. Am I best to stick with the S&W mags. Wilson's look good, are there others to consider?

Thanks, can't wait to start breaking it in.

There's all kinds of places on line like Hogues. You could go to a gun show and get some with allen head's and such. I have the same pistol and it's still box stock witout one failure in over 6,000rds. So I say forget the mods and enjoy the pistol. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum hrspear, great gun, I would not recommend any mods, just shoot, shoot and shoot it and see what happens. I have three S&W 1911 and the wilson mags work great. For grips go to E-BAY and put in grips for 1911's, should be able to get some nice wood cheap. Would love to see some PICS and a range report.Best of luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.

Welcome to the forum.

Do yourself a favor -- take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the site's organization. We have a discussion area for grips. The grip part of your question belongs there. We have a discussion area for magazines -- the magazine portion of your question belongs there. And we have an area to ask gunsmithing questions, which is where the part of your question about trigger jobs belongs. Come to think of it, you didn't ask anything that belongs in the S&W discussion area.

Wood grips: Esmeralda (www.esmeralda.cc)

Magazines: whichever your pistol like. Typically, CheckMate Industries 7-rounders with the dimple follower and hybrid lips. But only your pistol can tell you which one it prefers.

Our site has at least five sponsors selling grips
- AlumaGrips
- VzGrips
- Linville
- Gulgalta Arms
- GunGrips.net

I believe a couple of them are offering discounts to M1911.org members.

Before you spend any money on the pistol. Shoot it. Shoot it a lot. Shoot it "for record." Establish a baseline for your performance with that pistol.

Once you know what you can do with the pistol as it is, then you'll have a better idea of where you might want to spend some money.

But, keep in mind that ammo spent on shooting will do more good for your shooting (assuming you practice properly, not just blast rounds downrange to make noise) than nearly any modification to a modern pistol.

Just my thought, your mileage will vary.

Regards,

Walt

To HRSPEAR, IMHO fusionfirearms.com has a pretty good selection of grips that are reasonably priced as well as mags which I've ordered from them recently for my PC1911 SKU 170261. I started out with two, was very pleased and have just ordered four more. The mags they sold me are SS with orange poly followers in 8 round configuration. This company has very good products and excellent prices to boot. Alas, this state I live in (California) has very arcane rules on which manufacturer to allow in, ergo I ended up with the Smith, with no regrets what so ever. I've been shooting the PC1911 in conjunction with my Pardons in .22 lr and .32 SW (Camp Perry Rules) and boy, do I love it!

Probably too late, but I would google grips for 1911 or something similar and be amazed at what is out there.

I've homed in on ISSU bullseye grips by Randall Fung which would fill my needs in competition. These grips can be configured to match my Pardini pistols for NRA (Camp Perry Rounds). Anatomical as they are, it is quite a process to order, what with the fitting and all,(down time of about a month +/-).
They don't come cheap, like $180.00 for the set, but I'm going for them as I feel that slab sided grips without thumb rests, palm rests are not going to do it for me.

FWIW

I rented and shot a lot of 1911s before choosing the S&W 108282. One of the reasons I liked the gun was the grips. The points on some of the diamond cut grips were a distraction and some actually hurt my hand. Before you spend $$ or $$$ on some grips, you might want to go to your local gun store and handle various guns to see what the grips feel like.

very nice looking grips for 36 dollars kg5388, I have three S&W 1911's. I only changed the grips on my PD with real stag grips for forty-five dollars from Stagleader on E-BAY,they feel and look great, but I still like the diamond cut wood grips the best.

For grips (and lots of other stuff) I thought I would also suggest Brownells, as they have a selection in their catalog.
