View Full Version : Does anybody here use recoil spring-guide rod bushings?

I just got my brownells catalog and I have been looking through it. I noticed these guide rod cusions/recoil spring cusihions, and saw how they reduce the chance of frame damage. I figured I might order some, because they aren't that expensive.

I'm not exactly sure what they do or if they would be useful in my gun. I have a close to brand new Dan Wesson CBOB.The gun has a regular 1 piece guide rod.

Thanks for the info.

It sounds like you are referring to shock buffers, not bushings. Their purpose is to cushion the impact when the slide slams into the frame on recoil. They can help with that, but they can also interfere with proper operation of the pistol, and if the springs are correct and in good condition, the shock buffers are not necessary.

Some "name" manufacturers use heavier-than-standard recoil springs to reduce problems with failures to return to battery. Some of them advocate the use of shock buffers ... because they are using heavier springs. I don't know if that's the case with a CBOB.

Shock buffers can cause severe problems with smaller pistols. They should not be used in an Officers ACP size pistol, and they are (IMHO) "iffy" in Commanders.

For some reason the slide stop notch on my MKIV Series 70 .38 Super is slightly longer, .38 ACP ammo maybe, any way, when the slide was pulled back the buffer prevented the slide stop from disengaging the slide.
So I stopped using them.

On another point do not do what I did, and install a lightweight recoil spring in by mistake, it was the right length, but not the correct pound rating.
I cracked the dust cover. But I'm drifting off topic.
