I bought a .45 with Ithaca marked on the slide at a pawn shop here and I looked up the s/n on the frame in "Know your .45 auto pistol" by E. J. Hoffschmidt. This book says the frame was made in '44 by Ithaca. I also went to www.coolgunsite.com and the s/n isn't listed under there Ithaca tab. Who is correct? Was the frame made by another? s/n is 1803990, thanks in advance.

1803990 is the serial number of a 1944 Remington Rand.

Government mismatch?
And didn't Colt provide the initial receivers for Ithaca?

The mis-match could have happened during a rebuild, or it could have happened after it left the military. Someone may have read Hoffschmidt's book and found an Ithaca slide to go on their Remington Rand.
Colt provided both receivers and slides to Ithaca, but they did not have Colt markings, and were marked and finished by Ithaca.
Springfield provided surplus receivers to Ithaca for initial start up, but any serial numbers and markings were removed, and the receivers were marked with Ithaca assigned serial numbers and 1911A1 markings.
