View Full Version : Hair trigger slide release?

Have about 500 rounds thru my new stainless Colt 80 series .45.
The slide release has gone from hard to engage to not holding open last shot to holding open but jumping loose when magazine was seated.
Now it holds open at last shot and stays put when a new mag is seated, but
all it takes is just a whisper of finger pressure to let go.
Do I need a gunsmith? Thanks in advance.

Does this happen with a variety of magazines? That is usually the first place to look with slide stop issues.

Would like to see a pic of the slide stop engaging the slide.

I'll work on making the requested photo.
With all three Colt mags and all three McCormack mags and even with no mag inserted, the slide stop lets go with just a brush of my thumb.
I did go to a 18lb Wilson Combat spring and a shok buffer......

Without having the pistol to look at there is not a right answer.
Is the slide stop cutout deformed? The Slide stop deformed?
I do not feel that it is the magazines, well maybe not all of them
Recoil spring would add some inertia.
Do you have another pistol that uses the same slide stop, that you could borrow?
Trying to help

+1 to Ken's suggestion. If it is independent of one or a couple of magazines it would be nice to have the option of swapping stops. Wichkas' request for pics of how it actually engages would help a lot. Also check out how the cutout in the slide compares in shape and depth to similar slides and how well your stop fits in it.

The problem is with the shok buff. Period! Get rid of that and put a 16 pound recoil spring back in your gun. Nothing is wrong with it. The reason your slide is returning to battery before when you insert a magazine is because your slamming it home too hard. I can do this with any semi-auto pistol you hand me.
To elaborate. The shok buff is taking up slide travel necessary for the slide stop to engage properly.
