I have a nickle plated 1943 M1911A1 that I recently acquired and just started shooting. Overall it appears to be in excellent shape and fired very little in it's lifetime. I am having false lock problems with the slide though. What is the best procedure to go through to find the reason for this?
Is todays .45 ACP ammo the right thing to fire in this older weapon?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Please describe what you mean by "false lock".

When the slide locks open like your clip is empty, mine isn't. It wants to do that every other round.
I have seen some threads about the spring being to powerful, but I think this is the original spring so that shouldn't be it. And I know it's not my thumb being out of position, apparently also known as "limp-wristing".
Is the ammo I'm using more powerful than what I should be using?
Could the clip be causing it, or the rounds themselves?
I'm really scratching my head over this one.
Thanks!

I'm thinking slide stop or magazines.
As a side note.....I would suggest to replace the recoil and firing pin spring since you say they might be "original".

You're probably right paul45, I should replace those items.
