This might not be the right section.....I apolgize if it is.

I have a gun terminolgy question. What does it mean when a website list a gun part as "Steel in the White"?

Is this basically uncoated steel? MidwayUSA has a STI square hammer I'm interested in but its "in the white". So does this mean I would need to get it coated, like GunKote or something?

I want a stainless hammer in that squared look, but haven't found one listed as "stainless" yet.

Thanks in advance.

In the white does mean unfinished so it would need to be finished somehow (such as hard chrome or blued to name a few) to keep it from rusting.

Is this basically uncoated steel?Yes - uncoated carbon steel. While stuff made from stainless steel can be coated with something, they're usually not coated when you buy them. However, they are not billed as "stainless steel in the white" - just "stainless steel".

Did I muddy that up enough for ya? :p

Unless you live in a particularly damp climate, a carbon steel hammer "in the white" should be okay if you wipe it with a silicone cloth when you clean & lube the pistol. Or, both Gun Kote and Lauer Duracoat offer both clear and pseudo-stainless coatings, so you can coat the hammer and maintain the stainless look you want.
