In case you didn't know, Laurer is about to release a new product, Duracoat SL. Its the same old Duracoat, just with self-lubricating properties. This should satisfy a lot of people who were previously choosing other finishes such as Black T or KG products over Duracoat because of their self lubricity. Like before, the big advantage that Duracoat has over most finishes is that it doesn't require baking.
At the SHOT show I handled an M4 that had been finished with Duracoat SL, and it seemed almost identical to regular Duracoat, which is good in my opinion. It might be slightly slicker, but I couldn't tell. Unfortunately, I just bought the original Matte Black Duracoat from Brownells. Maybe I'll order some of the SL when I finish my new 1911 project...

Thanks for the information. While I didn't know about it, I suspected some thing like this was coming. It is good to find that my suspicions have been confirmed.
Now, all I need is some warm weather, and some Duracoat SL.

A little trick auto body people (who don't have a spray booth in the back yard) or woodworkers like me will do is to spray your parts outdoors, even in cold weather, then immediately carry the part indoors to a heated area where the finish can properly dry. The parts and paint need to be at the warm indoors temperature before you carry them outside to be sprayed and then carried immediately back indoors while the finish is still wet. It works surprisingly well, although I live pretty far south and don't get much weather below freezing. You might want to keep that point in mind.

I was able to get a couple painted using that technique last December. Since then, it has been below zero every day I had free. (Most every day, in fact).
With my work schedule, winter time painting is going to be a weekend affair. I am also getting a little too old to be rushing in and out of doors in cold weather. So, I am waiting until spring time.
Its not a big problem. It took me 52 years to paint my first pistol. I can wait another couple of months. This gives me time to ponder the big questions. Do I really want a Barney Purple and Commie Pink tiger striped AR15? Do I really want a red, white and blue Gov't model?
