Is it just me, or doesn't it look like there was another set of numbers on the slide? Maybe the first attempt at stamping the numbers didn't work, so they went back and re-did it?
In any case, it is a nice looking pistol.

In the early days of WW2, Colts took their stock of Government Models and sanded out the model name and commercial serial number off replacing it with the USGI name and serial number. This is whats so hot about this specimen!
Congrats, Mr. Holbrook you caught a real live one!

I believe they were peened out with a hammer and punch, hence the rough surface that the USGI serial number and USP markings were applied to.
