Once again, I was with my bud, forum member Larry, visiting gunshops in Fayetteville, when we stumbled across this MKIV. Nice 2-tone, and I changed the pebble wrap-around stocks to wood ones. How bout a pic?

Looks great ! If my septic system didn't blow up and cost me my next several gun purchases I would have pushed you into the case and bought it myself.....LOL!
At least one of us got it...... :D

Nice find! I saw a listing for Colt .40 cal magazines somewhere and I remember thinking it must be a typo. Let us know how it shoots!

Oh, and by the way, I dunno if I'd go to gunshops with your buddy Larry- one of these times his plastic will hit the counter first!

Good for you! I look in the shops I go to now all the time, but so far I've only managed to find 2 purchases, but if I keep looking like you do, I'll find something, eventually.

Thanks! I thought it to be a Combat Elite and have to admit Larry is the one to notice the caliber after it was in our hands for a bit. :o
It also has the dual recoil spring and plastic guide rod like the Deltas......I changed out the outer spring and firing pin spring, also changed out the magazine springs.

The only reason I do not hate you, is because I am not thrilled with the caliber of that pistol. But apart from that, it fits my "ideal Government" specs almost perfectly. Congrats!!

I agree. Visually, it is a perfect configuration for me as well. Caliber is definately odd, almost not desirable. It does fill a void, though, as I would like an example of all the different calibers Colt used to offer. Another shop has a Gov't in 9x23 with box that we liked, but we thought it to be a little pricey.

Can I ask why people dont like the 40S&W caliber?
I had always heard it was the best of both worlds, the stopping power of a .45, with the recoil of a 9mm.

.40 S&W is a great caliber. I would guess that more LE agencies use that caliber than any other in this country. I have never seen one in a Colt so it is indeed a rarity. I personally like my .40 out of a Sig P229.

Can I ask why people dont like the 40S&W caliber?I think that in a "1911" .40 takes a second seat to .45 and .38 as evidenced by the fact that one never sees .40S&W.
is that one of the 10/40 's they made a few of?No, those are rollmarked "Elite 10/40" and actually came in 10mm with the .40 barrel and accessories as an option. Perhaps Larry can show a pic of his?
Now that is a cool find, Paul. Thanks! It certainly piqued our interest as another odd caliber from Colt.

Thanks, Larry... for posting those pics! :)
I do wish Colt offered their plain ole' vanilla 1991 Commander in a .40 S&W chambering. My oldest son would go for that! He won't hardly touch a gun unless it's a .40 caliber.

Personally, I don't like the feel of the recoil impulse from the .40. Admittedly, I have only fired the round out of two different guns; an HK usp .40 compact, and a Springfield XD40. It seems "sharp", or "snappy", whereas the .45ACP feels like a gentle "shove" in comparison. I guess the higher pressure and velocity of the .40 provide the snappy feeling. The .40 has plenty of fans, though, so I'm sure I sound full of it to them. This is just my personal feeling about the .40- I'll be sticking with 230 grains at 850 fps myself!

While I to wish Colt would listen to us and offer some different calibers. From what I have heard from different sources most 1911 pistols in .40 weren't to reliable and most seemed to have numerous issues. My own wishes would be for Colt to offer a S70 in .38 Super and 9mm. But oh well!
