I got my first Colt yesterday and got to shoot it today. It is smooth, and I'm making it my every day carry.

Mine is the Series 70. For the time being anyway, my Kimber, my Nighthawk and my Glock are in the safe. I'm a believer now.

Wow, the proceeds from the sale of a Kimber, Nighthawk, and a Glock could net you two more brand new Colts!!!!!! :eb: :eb:

.....I don't sell or trade guns.......

 uh huh...yeah.....we'll see how long that lasts against a good infection of coltitis. i used to say that, too; boy did i have a change of heart: Glock and a Ruger got liquidated - quick - and i haven't looked back.

HorseArtillery is correct. I sold two tricked out Kimbers, a Para-Ord P14 LTD, a heavily accessorized LNIB HK 91 and tons of other cool stuff and family members to support my Colt habit.

I'm hoping to get my wife out of hock this payday but have my eye on a new Commander... so she just may have to wait till after the holiday. Nah... I'm only joking about the wife. I bought her back from Fast Eddie's Pawn & Gun more than a month ago!

See, I'd put the wife in indentured servitude before I gave up a gun.

Congratulations on your new Colt!

I'd leave the loving wife at the pawnshop. If you don't make payments on your loan eventually you don't get your stuff back! ;)

Welp, as a newby I guess I'll plug-in here and glom onto this thread for starters.

Love the pics, and believe I'm looking for something similiar in a Colt. My son has a 1991A1 and was fairly patient with me when I bought a Para Ornance P-7 a few years ago (that got sold and fortunately didn't take a bath on it).

I'm somewhat familiar with 1911's from the service, decades ago (my carry was an Ithica 1911 in Vietnam).

Now I've been looking at Colts and Kimbers (cheaper). My son is trying to lever me towards Colts, and obviously there seems to be a hint of bias that way in this thread and board page.

So I put it to y'all: my local dealer has a good supply of Springfield Armory, Kimber, Colt, and some used stuff. The Springfield and Colts are the most expensive, and tend more traditional from what I've seen on hand. The Kimbers have nice sights and seem more modernised.

Educate me. Should I hold out for a Colt with upgrade sights for more money? Will I regret a Kimber (my son's yammering notwithstanding)?

let me try this: with colt, your not only getting what you pay for, you are really getting one heck of a bargain. i think others here will readily agree.

you had better get the colt if you can lay your hands on it; they dont exactly grow on trees. takes me months to find what i am looking for - on several occasions now. that testifies to how much in demand they are.

i'll let others now....

Well, the Kimber would probably function fine for you, but there is something about a Colt that no other brand can do for you (well, me anyway). You will feel "attached" to it. That probably won't happen with the Kimber.

My first 1911 was a Kimber CDP Pro II. I loved it then and I still love it. My next 1911 was a Nighthawk GRP Recon, another very satisfying acquisition. Then I got to feeling like, "hey, now I'm a 1911 collector, and no 1911 collection is complete without a Colt." I was actually in the market for more of a beater that I could abuse, but I came upon a great deal in a stainless steel Government Model Series 70, and I had to have it. I've actually unloaded and put away the Kimber and the Nighthawk, at least for now. My Colt will be making the rounds with me, just as my Kimber and my Nighthawk have been doing. I'm sure they will get back in the rotation soon, but this Colt is my new best friend. In retrospect, I wish I had bought it first. That said, buy the Colt for a few extra bills, you won't be sorry.

There's one of those locally with about the front inch of its muzzle darkened from blast. Kinda spendy too, but I'm sure I could shoot it first.

I've owned only a couple of Colt 1911s and one Kimber. Out of the box, the Kimber was more accurate. The Colts are okay for general range and defense but not as accurate as the Kimber. However, my Kimber was much less reliable. I've never had a single problem out of either Colt. The Kimber is gone and I still own the Colts.

I don't think my experience is unique. While many people have great luck with Kimbers, I think it is fair to say that have a tendency of being more hit and miss in the reliability department than Colt but are generally more accurate out of the box.
