I tried searching this but came up empty... Is the rampant colt logo on the slides of the NRM 1991 series "skinnier" than it was on previous models? The series 70 rampant colt looks more plump to me.

Jim,

There was a thread with info concerning this about a year or so past... and yes, it too remarked about a "starving" pony and a "well-fed pony"... :)

I've noticed some differences in the styling of Colt's rampant pony on several of my Colt pistols.

I guess that shouldn't surprise me- Colt is notorious for strange rollmark changes.

I don't think I know what you are referring to..... can you give some examples? Thanks

You are correct, the Blind, Deaf & Anorexic Pony on the NRM. ;)

From Bill Adair;

I get a whole lot of the same type of problem: Rampant Colt's with missing heads or feet, for example. I don't know how many hundreds of these heads and feet I've put back on. There are well over 50 different Rampant Colt designs thru all the years of Colt Single Actions (about 20 in that line), model 1911's, Woodsman, and on and on, so when you're putting a head back on the horse, it's very nice to know which head it had in the first place! That's where the ink-print collection is worth its weight in gold.

Thanks! While I knew of occasional changes, I never knew it was 50!

I didn't either, Paul. I knew there were several different variations, just from owning a few Colt's, but I was surprised at just how many Rampant Ponies there really are.

As a Colt becomes a Horse at age 4, and they would have to be about 6 months old to pose. It would take about 50 Ponies to fulfil the life span of Colt. That skinny one, a last minute stand in was only 3 months old. :p

Thats hilarious! And Paul45, I was referring to things like Colt changing the size but not the font of the rollmark on the series 70 guns in about 1978, and the repeated back-and-forth rollmarking of steel framed commanders as "combat commanders" or just "commanders". I see the XSE sports the "combat commander" rollmark once again. Also "Colt's" being changed to "Colt" and back again. I'm sure there are others!

This too... :)

There have been some of Colt's pistols that didn't even get a prancing pony rollmarked on the slide... :nono:

One of our very distinguished forum members had one...

He sent his Colt back to Hartford with a request to stamp the pony on it... :appld:

If I recall correctly, he specifically requested the "fat & well fed" pony... http://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon14.gif ;)

So Colt has changed their logo as much as, say, Cadillac has?

Thanks for posting that pic, OD*. That's just a sorry excuse for a "Rampant Colt". I was seriously looking at getting an 04091U commander, but I don't know if I can live with a donkey on the side of my Colt. I guess I'll take another look at the XSE Combat Commander or maybe an older model.

The NRMs are truly some excellent pistols, I wouldn't let a rollmark dissuade me.

Good Lord you are picky. You won't get the Commander because of the skinny pony? Feed it enough (ammo) and it will grow to its standard proportions (on you).

Darned.....good examples! One of those things Colt does that is easy to overlook.......for me, anyway.

I guess perhaps I am being too picky about this. But, I can't help but wonder why in the world Colt would go out of their way to change a logo that was perfect, to something that is more of a crude rendition of THE SAME LOGO. Oh well, the pistol itself IS more important, so I guess I might be able to get past it. I could always have a smith put eyes and ears on it, anyway. :o
