Which is something to be "thankful" for! http://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

But... I'll let the photos tell the story. (I would have been in serious trouble here without them anyway!)

That Combat Commander was "born" in 1976!

The above Series 70 Mk.IV Government Model is from 1977.

A few more pics... and yes, Colt prices in 1977 were rather nice... :butthead:

I just noticed the serial number on that 9mm Combat Commander. I would think it might be made earlier than 1976. I have one made in 1976 and it has five numbers on the end and yours only has three.

P.S.- The pistol prices are good, but I think the $2.00 COD charge is a bit steep. ;)

I've read your words of admiration for this Colt and yes, such did make an impression upon me. ;)

Thanks, John... and I'll add that I had heard these were at our gunstore for almost a week before I got sufficiently brave to venture down there. I had a fairly good feeling (or perhaps better deemed a bad feeling) about what would happen when I saw these Colts... :(

Resistance was futile...

Steve, Joni Lynn, Gordon... and Creighton... thanks for your kind words. I am very appreciative and grateful for what you've said. The family's doing quite well, my pop underwent surgery yesterday and is home today and got to eat Thanksgiving dinner with us. As for the Baer, it'll have some character soon enough. Wink, wink, nod, nod, say no more. I just noticed your post script, very funny! I was too busy ogling the nickel model. I don't know what it is, but I'm a sucker for government models.

Congratulations!!!!

Not only did you get the original boxes, you got the original receipts! Very cool. Not bad at all, you got a nickel finish Government Model and a 9mm Commander! I wanted a 9mm so badly and couldn't find one at a good price, Colt doesn't currently offer them, (I have the Colt problem very bad) so I had a Colt Super 38 converted to shoot 9mm. I believe I have shot my 9mm SCG more than any pistol I have ever owned.

Are you going to shoot with your new pair?

That's a lot to be thankful for... :) Especially your dad making it back home in time to enjoy the Thanksgiving meal with everyone! :)

Now, that Baer has plenty of character already... she is quite stunning in the looks department. The attention to detail and quality is simply amazing in this day and age. I'm beginning to understand how Joni Lynn is so taken with the Les Baer 1911 pistols. If you see precise fit and finish on the outside... then it's a safe bet the same is on the inside... ;)

I'm a sucker for those Government models too... and yeah, the "bling" got to me... :o

Thanks, Dave... I appreciate your compliment on the two Colts. Alas, the Commander was the only one of the two with a receipt. Colt really ought to offer a 9mm in both their Government and Commander models... perhaps throughout the entire line of 1911 pistols they make.

I'm not sure if I can bring myself to shoot these just yet... :nono: :o

To be honest, I've not even racked the slide on 'em... I've got it bad, huh? :butthead:

Landman,

Thanks for the compliment... guess I did fairly well there. I've always "heard" and read it's a good idea to obscure serial numbers. I know a piece of tape laid over that part of a firearm works... or a black "box" layered in over the number. Of course, I just might be worrying about nothing in the end.

Thanks, Paul... I appreciate your kind words and I gotta admit, I was kinda happy over bringing them home too! :)

I've seen so many fine Colts posted up on this forum, it all becomes very intoxicating and inspiring at the same time. ;)

Too, there was a big part of me that couldn't stand to see these two end up being "chopped" or suffering worse fates... :(

Thanks, Danno... I appreciate that and I am/was the same way... didn't think that nickel did it for me until I saw that Government Model all shiny... guess the bling did me in... :)

My son saw this one in the gunstore and came home telling me it was the "prettiest 1911" he had ever seen. Perhaps the proliferation of all these tactical finishes we have now tend to make a traditional high lustre nickel finish look more appealing... ;)

HorseArtillery is of the opinion that a set of ivory stocks with a Colt medallion inlaid would look mighty nice on that nickel Series 70... and I'm inclined to think he's right!

Just make sure that if you shoot the nickel pistol that you don't use Hoppes #9 or any copper cleaner solvent, it will mess up the nickel plate. I'm told that it attacks the copper that they use underneath the nickel and will cause problems with the nickel finish.

Dave,

I believe you are precisely right... at least that's exactly what I've heard before- a very strong admonishment to keep the Hoppe's #9 and many other products away from the nickel finish on a firearm. The resulting damage is supposed to happen as you stated... attacking the copper underneath the nickel plating... :(

Thanks, Kyle... I appreciate your compliment and kind words. That shiny nickel plated Colt is fast becoming my favorite too. Another forum member has urged me to consider some ivory stocks with Colt medallions inlaid... and I think he's absolutely right. I can't honestly see much other room for improvement... ;) :)
