View Full Version : My First COLT

After the mandatory 10 day wait, I got to pick up my new Commander this morning. Then the strangest thing happened, I went from the store back to work and started feeling very strange. I couldn’t concentrate, beads of sweat were forming on my brow and I was having difficulty breathing. I felt that the only way to alleviate this condition was lots of fresh air. The only thing I could figure to do was to leave work early, grab the range bag, some ammo and head to the range where they have those great big exhaust fans and air scrubbers.

Two hundred accurate and flawless rounds later I was back to normal and smiling. I don’t care what anyone says, there’s something about spent gunpowder and a COLT that is purely therapeutic.

Sounds like your colt did good. Funny I had the same feeling when I bought my Colt as well.

Very nice pistol. Yea there is something about those Colts, to be sure.
I am glad she is working out for you but I would expect a relapse of your condition which will require another range trip.
Before too long it may get bad enough to need ANOTHER Colt, an affliction many of us deal with.
Seriously that is a fine looking Colt you have.

Thank you Hunter, actually I'm hoping for a relapse, in the mean time I just practice for one! :D

I just wish we had more of COLT's models to choose from here in California. I'd like to have a WWI repro and try to find a WWII repro as well. I'll keep looking, I'll end up with them yet! ;)

Nah... I'm only joking, we wouldn't really do that. Welcome aboard.

I understand your frustration with the 10 wait. We need to work on that.
Nice Colt. May I suggest that you change your target a little more frequently.

Great looking 1991A1 Colt Commander you got there. I have the all stainless version. We have similar tastes. I like the traditional looking commanders. XSE's look a little too cosmetic for me. I figure which one would John Wayne use? Seems like an easy answer to me. The 1991A1 Commander. Oh by the way, the Commander was standard issue to the Texas Rangers until around 1988.

i couldn't agree more; that's my first choice as well. looks great - like the stocks. excellent choice. i also have to agree with everyone else here. just get ready for even more uncontrollable sweating, nervous fits, and hair falling out. the withdrawals are merciless...... :bed:

The 10 day wait is almost tolerable, but that 1 in 30 days, that one's tough.

I used to change the target more often, but then it occured to me, if you change the target, you have to stop shooting! :D :D

Great choice. I know you will enjoy. Commanders are the best.
Regarding your illness, my theory is that the number of Colts required to satisfy the addiction is the number you currently have plus one. In equation form:

N = nC + 1 for all positive numbers.

IMHO, this postulation defies disproving...

Daveohno, Swampthang, HorseArtillery, DV52, O.D., D90king, Gordon Jr., I would really like to thank all of you for your great comments and sharing your knowledge and experience. Rio Vista Slim, and Hawkmoon for explaining the model differences to me, and many others.

I've never held a Commander before, let alone shot one, but I wanted this size pistol, read everyones comments and opinions throughout these forums, decided on a Colt's and this model for the traditional features, hammer, grip safety, etc.

I would like to say, I was prepared for many issues, but based on this purchase, Colt's Manufacturing is alive and well, out of box reliability and aesthetics does exist, and as many of you (if not all ;) ) I will have another, and hopefully pretty soon! :D

Ah, Commanderitis - a particularly virulent strain of Coltitis. In addition to the symptoms you described, expect the urge, nay, the need, to acquire additional Commanders (ask me how I know).

Congratulations on a beautiful pistol - enjoy!

I just bought a Ruger 10/22. There is only a 1 day wait here for a long gun, but there is that pesky gun registration that I have to do, I haven't even picked up the Ruger because the registration nearly takes the fun out of buying them at all. I can imagine some industrious person come up with the idea that a 1 per year limit is a good idea.

Congrats on the new commander and glad to hear it has been flawless. I picked a stainless one up about a month ago now and it's been a real pain the behind. I'm guessing mine was the one in a thousand that slipped through QC, had a lot of problems related to an improperly fitted slide stop, bad magazines, incorrect extractor tension, and what I assume was some needed break-in time.
With the help of the forums here I finally have it running right and am able to enjoy shooting it.

As you can see in the photo, the slide stop has been replaced with a blued one, but it works fine now and that's all I care about.

Regarding Coltitis/Commanderitis... I definitely have a case of it as well, put another one on layaway at my local crack... er, gun dealer's. :)

It also has a very rapid onset, and with all addictions, I'm finding that I'm looking forward to my next "fix". :)

Glad you got yours working, I especially like that undercut on the trigger guard on your model. I'm considering one of those as well...

I liked the undercut too. It's a great shooter now that it's running, and I've been carrying it a lot lately since I find the size to be ideal for concealed carry.

I do want a Commander in .45 ACP... one of the new Colts, mind you... just like yours, pdangeruss. The onset of my Commanderitis relapse was virtually guaranteed today when HorseArtillery showed me his pretty Commander... no less than with very seductive ivory stocks and Colt medallions inlaid... now why did he do that to me? :(
