I am just wondering if after polishing, lapping or sanding?
How do you guys ensure that there are no lapping compound or abrasive left behind?

Automotive brake cleaner and old toothbrush.
Be advised that the brake cleaner may eat the toothbrush after awhile.

Unchlorinated brake cleaner is what I use. You can even use it on your plastic guns. I use CLP for the final cleaning. I have never had a problem.

If the abrasive used is a non-embedding one, just about anything from soap & water to kerosene to exotic hydrocarbon-based cleaners will work with a little scrubbing with Hawkmoon's toothbrush.
If, however, the abrasive used is an embedding one . . . well, it's embedded into the surface and cannot be easily removed - except for the residue that didn't get embedded.

Are liquid metal polish used in home embedding? The ones used to polish brass?

The first thing you'd have to do is find out exactly what the abrasive is in the specific polish used. Then search this site or the web for "embedding abrasives" to find out whether that particular abrasive is embedding or non-embedding.
