Gives you a shudder just thinking about what is going to be in this thread....doesn't it?
In reality, I have an extra 1911 Ciener kit laying around and I'm fitting some new parts to my PM7, so.............
I was thinking of using the stock DW parts and the Ciener kit to build a cheapo dedicated .22.
I was even thinking of doing it in a FDE Molyresin
Where can I get a cheap frame? Bare steel........in the white.........
I don't mind if it needs a lot of fitting, I'm going for cost over convenience.

Essex has the cheapest frames I have seen, you can get them through Essex, Brownells, and Midway. Caspian has a little more expensive frames, but also a little better quality from what I have heard, again through Caspian, Brownells, Midway.

You're a few days (months) late. The $25 frames that Sarco was selling would have been exactly what you're looking for. At the moment, I don't know of any source for inexpensive in-the-white frames. Caspian's frames are unfinished, but not inexpensive. Both Essex and Rock Island/Armscor are less expensive than Caspian (but not "cheap"), but they come pre-finished.

CenterFire Systems has Double Star full size 1911 frames for $100.00, a friend just picked up 2 of them, they look good, have checkered front straps, and are parkerized.

Never mind, I just checked their website (CenterFire), and the DS frames are sold out.

I have a Doublestar, and other than visible casting marks, (which I have since polished out and refinished), it has turned out to be quite good. All of the holes are exactly where they need to be.
Caspian some times sells their slightly blemished frames under the Foster label. This is another possibility. The ones I have seen looked really good.
