Bought a new RIA 1911 with the express intent of making it a "tinkering"/project gun.

(It's the Nickle Plated "government tactical" version).

I'm planning on slowly turning it into a bit of a racegun. I have some ideas but I thought I'd throw open the brainstorming and ask what YOU folks might change (sear, trigger, barrel, comp, etc) and what parts of the gun are high enough quality that they should just be left alone.

Let 'er rip!

If I were in your position with a new RIA, I think the first thing I would do is shoot it a lot, and in the process see what works well about the gun and what doesn't work so well.

For example, do you like the trigger weight, smoothness, etc.? Do the grips suit you? Are the sights hard to see? Is the gun shooting to point of aim?

In other words, shoot the gun to find out what you want to change and improve.

I used a Rock Island frame for a build I did last year and I should mention that you might (as I did) have spec issues with RIA components, and this might complicate the installation of aftermarket parts. Then again, if you like to tinker, that might be the kind of challenge you enjoy!

Whatever you choose to do, you will find a lot of great information on tools and techniques right here. The search function will turn up plenty of helpful input.

Have fun and stay safe
