I'm thinking of purchasing one in stainless steel. Does anyone know what additional work is done in the Colt Custom Shop for these guns? Is the barrel hand fit, the bushing tighter, etc.? Also, does anyone know if there are any real stainless steel spur hammers that can be substituted for the hammer in the Series 70 as it seems to me that they come with nickel plated carbon steel. Thanks so much in advance!

Mine seems to be well made, good fit on the barrel and bushing as well as rear barrel fit. I haven't noticed that my hammer is plated. The repo 70 is a much better made 1911 than my original series 70 is.

I've had several stainless steel Colt pistols, none have had plated hammers.

I'm not sure there is much of anything special done to the Series 70 Colt repros except to leave the series 80 parts (read: lawyer parts) off the pistol.

I recently purchased a blue Series 70 repro that was very poorly fitted.

The Slide rubbed on the dustcover leading to chewing metal within 200 rounds. The slide was not centered in the frame. Others have reported the same problem.

The barrel rode the link and had a lot of slop in the bushing. It could be easily pushed down out of lockup when in battery by finger pressure.

I do not believe the gun is in any way, shape or form "custom". I consider it marketing hype. It is nice that Colt deleted the old 'fingers' bushing but that doesn't constitute 'custom'.

The fit and finish of my specimen would serve as an extreme indictment of Colt's Custom shop if I'm wrong.

You can't judge all guns from a particular manufacturer on the basis of a single sample but I'd suggest a *very* through examination of any pistol you consider. There are good ones out there.

Under no circumstances would I purchase a Colt sight unseen.

Good luck to you.

I've been looking for a Stainless 70 Series Repro for a few months now. I have passed over 3 or 4 samples for cosmetic issues that may not bother other people. Things like slide not centered in the frame resulting in rubbing on one side of the dust cover, rear of slide not flush with rear of frame, hammer rub, sloppy polishing resulting in uneven flats, and other minor issues. The price on these guns has increased about $100 since the election at the major dealers in the DFW area, and if I'm going to spend close to $1000 on a new gun, I would prefer it to be put together properly. I am still looking.

My blue Colt Series 70 Government Model (Repro) is absolutely FLAWLESS. Fit and finish are 100%, very accurate, and feeds anything I give it.

The only issues I've had with my Colt's has been some of the sights had worked loose. Other than that, they've been just fine.
