This place is addictive much like Colt 1911s. My question is, would you buy an older Combat Elite or a new Combat Commander if given the choice?? :butthead: I am trying to decide between the two. Thanks.

That is one nasty decision for someone to have to make........glad I'm not in your shoes! :D
Ok, now for the serious side of things.
I think you need to ask yourself what you'll be doing with it mostly.
Range, concealed carry or?

Well, it is a well-known fact that I am a Commander fan. I would go with the Commander for sure.

Both is a good choice.....

Wichaka, makes a good point! A firearm is a tool and like any tool, the mission determines the best tool for the job. However, as an all encompassing tool, I agree with John on the Commander. But, Cliff731 also has a good idea, buy both!
Correct answer? All of the above! :D
Best of Luck!

......and you thought you were going to get some help on this forum.....so mistaken..... :p :D
if one, the commander.
but, you could get revenge on these folks for making your choice hard by getting both: they would all be very jealous and let you know it :eb:

I like older Colts, so I would get the CE.
I figure one can get a new Commander easily enough, but old CEs don't jump out too often.

If only one... then the CE!

I do intend to buy a Combat Elite because they are great pistols......not for carry though....Luv the new Colt grips....Luv the Elite but not for carry.....too big and heavy for a 7-yard defensive weapon.

Busted. :o
Yeah I don't carry either all that much - the DE mostly for woods carry. My more "civilian" duties typically go to muts like my Compact CDP Kimber, something easily replaceable.

The original Combat Elite was the first 1911 I ever owned so I have a sentimental spot in my heart for it. I never carried it much, though. I'm short and the extra 3/4 inch in the barrel length does make a difference to me. Mine is one of the early models which came in a cardboard box. Here's my Combat Elite after 20+ years. First, with it's original grips:

Now, with some wood on it:

I'm probably going to get the new CE after Christmas. I don't know how much I'll carry it but I really like the looks of it too!

From what I've seen of the latest Colt products, definitely go with the new Commander. I have an early Combat Elite (In fact I'm staring at it as I type this) and am reminded of all the $$$ I spent in gunsmithing services just to have it function properly.

Bluegrazzguy,
It's funny how I never considered putting some wood on my Elite...just never crossed my mind. I have to say that it does add character to your gun. Now I'll need to check out some options and attempt to rekindle some passion for mine. I was thinking thatsome of the Micarta offerings would go well. Hmmm.

All I can tell you is that the all stainless 1991A1 Commander I bought this past July had been flawless. I have shot but about 500-600 rounds of all types of factory ammo. No FTF or FTRB yet. Accurate too. Paid $809, brand new. Good price for a good defender. Colt lately has been making top quality 1911s.
