Recently saw an early Colt National Match that was not marked as a Gold Cup. The serial number seams to place it in the 1956 YOM. What are the differences between these early NMs and the Gold Cups which were introduced in 1957? Were there any improvements with the GC that would make them more desirable as a shooter or collector? BTW, it is in very, very good condition but not 100%.

The first of the Gold Cup National Match were only marked National Match, the box however said Gold Cup.
Prodction began in 1957 and those gun used an Accro style rear sight instead of the more widely known Elliason.
The slides had material removed internally which may make them a bit weak and easier to damage with full power ammo, however i've not seen one damaged. It may be more myth than fact.
They were well made and reasonably accurate.
Did you get a serial number?
I have a few of these around here somewhere.

Joni,
Thanks. I was betting on you to come through with what I needed. Serial Number range is 40xx NM.

That would put it in the production year of 1959.
