View Full Version : Post Election Colt Prices

I went to the Dallas Gun Show last weekend and noticed a Colt 70 Series Repro I had looked at the previous week had increased $100 in one week. Today I went to the Ft. Worth Gun Show and all the major dealers had hiked prices on all 70 Series Repros and WWI Repros by about $100. All of this since the election on Nov 4. I'm wondering if this price increase is directly from Colt or just the dealers hiking the prices in view of the huge increase of crowds at the post-election gun shows. Today one of the dealers remarked that this was the largest crowd he has seen since he started doing gun shows in 1970. How are Colt prices in your area doing relative to pre-election prices?

There has been a lot of wild talk about Obama and/or the democrats banning guns. Perhaps some folks decided to try to make a quick profit out of prospective panic buying by gullible believers.

I am pretty sure Colt has not gone up on their prices.
It is dealers trying to take advantage of the situation.
Let's please not let this turn into a political discussion.

Colts are as scarce as he's teeth here so I can't comment on those particular prices. The general climate around local stores though has been one of frenzied buying. If it's a black rifle or high cap mag, it's going out the door.

In my area gun and ammo sales have increased 30-50 percent since the election. Furtunately, I have an adequate supply of both. Maybe I do need a few k of primers. Better run.

Firearms are the only segment 0f the economy that is hot right now. People are looking down the road and are worried about a new ban of some sort. Supply and demand is at work here. Guns are hot so the prices are spiking.

It's the good old "free market" supply and demand thing.

good mornin all, I've had a few inquiries about my 2 GCNM that made me think twice about keeping them. my Dad left 'em to me but in these financial times, have you see alot of people unloading them. I'm just curious.
UNloading?

Nope. Nobody is selling. Everybody is buying.

WWI repro in my area is selling for $969 - 999. I just put a down payment yesterday and will be picking her up probably Tuesday. Gun sales are up, NRA safety course students signing up has also increased. 2 gun stores that I frequent are packed during mid week and weekends.

No price increases.....just very busy sales in my area. My second favorite local shop had people waiting in line to buy ARs. and mags.

it was more of the same at the ft worth gun show this weekend. the handgun prices werent bad, it was the AR's that were insane. 520 for a DPMS lower. :scared:

Same frenetic scenario here in Charlotte, NC.

Three shops I deal with have just been absolutely packed with folks buying handguns, rifles, shotguns.

Ar rifles and ammo are pretty much sold out. The local Walmart shelves are pretty bare and when I was there yesterday totally out of 5.56/.223 ammo.

My range is doing unbelievably brisk business this month with their gun sales. It seems as though there are more folks filling out forms than shooting. Saw an article on CNN web site a week or so ago - they said that gun sales are up 50% in November over last year.

Folks, please remember that politics and political comments are out of bounds around here.

I just bought my first Colt 1911. The price was $789.00. My wife and I tried it out today. Only one problem, I am hooked.

It is a New Agent.

Most of the dealers here in the DFW area have gone up on their gun show prices because of increased demand and limited availability. Anything like high capacity magazines and the semi-automatic rifles are very hard to come by right now, so expect to pay more for a while.

I went to the local Cabelas and they were pretty busy while I was there. It was my first visit there, so I can't comment about if it seemed busier than usual, but there were people buying firearms.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Cheaper Than Dirt in Ft. Worth sold $101,000 worth of guns alone, the day after the election. It was their biggest day ever.

Panic buying has increased the demand sharply and dealers and individuals at the shows are taking advantage of it.

The stores here are doing a brisk business in all things. One of the Dick's Sporting Goods stores was almost completlely out of handgun ammo. The shelves were almost completely bare.

I haven't noticed much of a bump in sales price on colts. I know most AKs have gone up in the last few months.

The local dick's to me was all out of 45 and 9mm. Clerk said GA and AL were both having trouble keeping it in stock.

It's a little disappointing to see how some places take extreme advantage of this situation. Disappointing but not all that unexpected from some of them.

I gotta hunch that this foolishness will end in a few months and we will find guns and ammo being recession discounted like most other retail merchandise. I would also suspect that we will gradually see an uptick in used firearms for sale - which may lower values in those as well. There is an ancient Hebrew curse, "May you live in interesting times." It seems we are.

daveohno
29th November 2008, 15:38
I thought that interesting times thing was a Chinese saying.

Prices of illegal items rarely go down in price. It will be pretty hard to shoot if ammunition is $100 per box.

I won't comment further because this issue could become a discussion of a political nature.

I've always understood the "interesting times" curse to be Chinese as well (sorry gfavaron). But there are also many fine Hebrew curses, my favorite being, "An onion should grow in your navel."

This of course has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of this thread (or much of anything else, for that matter) but

My Uncle, a man of great wisdom, informed me that the guy who said that had a Jewish Father and a Chinese Mother! :)

Heheheh. Phrases.org.uk suggests that we are all wrong, and that the phrase is of recent origin and was probably just written to "sound Chinese" Oh well . . . . . :-)

I apologize though - it is my fault this has drifted off topic.

Drifting off topic is what we specialize in, here! 95% on topic posts and one here and there that misses the topic by a "smidge". I've been looking for metal lipped 10/22 magazines, myself. Ooops, I did it again. ;)

Uhhh... according to one of my sons, those metal lip 10/22 mags are the cat's meow... perhaps even the cat's whiskers! :D

Oops... I did it too... :o

Back on topic... :D

There's a well known online retailer... no names here, mind you... as they have been the subject of a recent thread on this forum... but my impression is their "online" Colt 1911 prices are up lately... :(

Something's afoot when my local gunstore has a NIB blued Colt Gold Cup Trophy offered for less money than this other place is asking online!

(and they happen to have two of them for sale!)

I trying to buy a GCT the other day but the guy wouldn't give me a price on it. Before I left he had refused to price several guns to me but had sold one for what I consider a good price to a guy that walked in while my father was looking at the gun.
There's another shop I'll mostly avoid from now on.

cliff731
30th November 2008, 19:28
Joni Lynn, that's definitely one gunstore to avoid... :(

I've couldn't imagine that anyone in the business of selling firearms would refuse to give a price on a gun to a customer.

Hmmm... that gives a whole new meaning to the word "allocated"...

I have a low opinion of the dealer anyway, but this pretty much took it to an all new lower level. I didn't need another GC anyway. My father was interested in the rifle he had in his hands though and for the price the guy got it for it was a decent enough buy.
Every time I asked for a price the response was "it depends on my mood".
With some of the other stores around here it's not really as much of a sellers market as it used to be.

Nutty as a fruitcake... a real looney tune... :p

If I understand all this correctly, the sales person sold the rifle to someone else that your Dad was holding and giving consideration to buying.

Joni, I've wondered at times if some people were put on this earth merely to test our patience and tolerance... :(

That's about it, dad was looking it over, I asked how much, was told "it depends on my mood" and then a guy walked in....a couple minutes later he asked how much it was, dad still holding it, the guy was quoted a decent price and said he'd take it.
Dad & I have bought enough guns from the guy to be treated better than that.
You should have seen the look on my father's face.

That is a bad situation! I would consider giving the FFL a negative write up in the "Members Thumbs Down" Thread.

I may do that but then again it would be burning a guy that is the only source for a few items I may need. As much as I don't like to go there now, sometimes it's just the only source.

I can imagine that neither You nor your Dad will ever grace their doors again.

That goes way beyond just being ignored... I've never heard worse of how to treat a customer.

Joni, I'll be glad to sell you a Gold Cup Trophy if you're interested in a blued one! I'll even give you a price on it. :D

Thanks, I may take you up on that sometime.
The GCT I was looking at had a really good barrel fit and the bushing was well fit to the barrel and slide. It's the best fit up GCT I've handled so far. I guess I can live without it.

The Ft. Lauderdale Show at the War Memorial Auditorium was packed with lines waiting to get in.
I fully expected they were giving away ammo or something.
Boy was I wrong. If the price wasn’t up, they didn’t have it.
Very few Colts!

I spotted a used, blue, Mark IV Series 80 Colt in a local pawnshop which has a fairly extensive guns shop. I live in the Cincinnati area. The gun was in decent shape with a few dings and a set of oil soaked battered grips.

They were asking $799 for it. They got it too, but not from me.
