Hello to all, I'm a newbie, and was wanting your opinion. My father has a ser. 70 government model that's in pristine condition. He bought it way back for less than 200.00. he has used strictly for Bullseye. Its equipped with a full rib in top, Bomar I believe. Now I am wanting to get started in IDPA. He suggested I take it since he no longer shoots in Comp. The main thing I am leary of is that by doing that it will get abused, worn, from holster use. Am I making a mistake by doing this. Am i taking away from it's value. My belief is that they are all intended to shoot, not sit in a safe, but it is my fathers, eventually it will be mine, the way that I wouldn't like to get it. Should I move on to another and keep this in the condition it is now. Thank you in advance for your opinions.

While the Series 70 is a great gun. It is not considered an antique, or an item sought by collector's, unless it was NIB. Personally, I would give dad a big hug and proceed to shoot the gun. Just take great care of it! :)
Best of Luck!

It's a personal decision, to be made by you and your father. You wrote that the pistol is now in pristine condition. If you shoot it in IDPA competition at all regularly, it will not stay in pristine condition for long ... as you already know.
Will that reduce the pistol's value? Monetarily, of course it will. However, unless you intend to sell it, only you can decide whether or not the potential sale value of a pistol that's not for sale is important.
